Is it possible to turn off ads on HW? There is a new ad showing up that runs on flash that resets every 10 seconds...and it scrolls back to the ad position every reset...making reading impossible. Any ideas?

Halbert, the ads seem to be individualised and taken from cookies on your device. You might notice the ads are from sites you've visited or searched, that's my case anyway. Don't have a clue what to do about it, probably nothing.

I'm wondering if using a new "incognito" browsing window while on HW will stop
the ads?

Guys, maybe we need to be a little more accommodating here, and understanding.

None of us are probably crazy about ads, whether the web variety, TV commercials, or whatever.

But I think we need to remember that many fine things like this forum need money from somewhere, just to exist.

Do you pay a fee to visit and participate in this forum, useful as it is? No, you don't, it's free to visit and use, for everyone.

But there are still costs in running and maintaining the Healingwell site, as for any site, and that includes all of the illness pages listed on the HW contents page (visit it if you haven't already), not just this one for prostate cancer.

I believe I am correct (Mods, back me up on this one) in pointing out that the presence here of ads, and in particular our clicking on those ads, generates revenue for Peter Waite, the site's owner, and thus HW PC is financially able to continue, and benefit us all.

Ads may not be the most fun thing around, but sometimes they need to be around.

But does an add need to interfere with reading, as Halbert describes? It would be nice to at least be able to stop such as that.

You're absolutely correct 81, I think Halbert was only referring to the one ad that is making things difficult for him. I click on the ads regularly to generate income!

Halbert, I have not noticed the problem you are having, don't know if it has anything to do with using Mac OS X last couple of months. But when I went back to the HWPC main page, I do see adds all over the place(not a problem) ad when I scrolled down I see that a video is running in a small window. But it has not been causing me to reset back to the add as you describe, and in fact I was able to pause the video.

Drudge Report used to drive me insane by resetting every couple of minutes, losing my place. But I got an add on for Firefox called Yesscript, which allowed me to add sites to a blacklist which would prevent them from running javascript, which is what caused the endless resets. No problems with that since then, have no idea if it might help with your issue.

Disable your flash player in your web broswer. There's a bug in flash and I've noticed this problem on a number of websites, not just HW. The scroll back rendered one of the news sites I go to useless for a couple of days. Then I turned off the flash player and while some web features aren't working at least I can still read the text.

Ads can be annoying, but someone has to pay for the servers, bandwidth and all the electrons we consume on this site. It's either ads or Pete would have to charge a subscription.

and if you go incognito, you just get generic untargeted ads.

I use a browser plugin called ghostery. It blocks ads, tracking cookies, etc.

Ghostery helps, but it will block you from doing some search functions.

No, there is not a way to avoid the ads. I know some forums that will turn them off for a fee, but then Peter would have to deal with that as well ...

I usually don't pay attention to the ads. However the one in particular that started showing up a few days ago runs this little 10 second video, and it prevents me from scrolling down to read...and prevents the reply box from staying put when I'm trying to type. Insane. It almost feels like they think the only reason I'm here is to read the ads.

Disabling flash is probably the right answer.

Clicking on ads to create revenue…without an honest interest in same ad is evil don't do it. Would you suggest that behavior as honorable to a four year old…ya know just to get him on the right track in life?? I know… at a different time, maybe even this one...some where…maybe even this country…sooner than later. guys like me are woken up at night …dragged to the local soccer stadium…or such…never to be seen again. I'll take my chances. In the long run my chances are better than……..

There are savvy marketers using your data. eg. an expert shared on our local radio station today how some purchasing websites use cookies and information to change prices of products. He cited how airline sites initially display a route and fare; but when you come back to the same site a little later, they'll deliberately change the price or the flight is suddenly no longer available and only the more expensive flight is available. [This was the practice 4 years ago... imagine how savvy they are nowadays"

So occasionally delete everything, especially cache and cookies and history!

I understand the necessity for ads. But honestly, i cant stand the targeted ads. I shop for a treadmill and everywhere i go i see treadmill ads all over the net. Makes me feel like big brother is watching. If i need a treadmill, i know how to use google. Please stop following me around, Mr Internet.

So no disrespect meant to those who voice the need for ads to pay for the site, but here is the answer, Halbert, it worked like a charm for me..

Google Adblock Plus. Download it. It will change your (internet) life forever LOL (SERIOUS). I thought it was mentioned here, but apparently not, so I'm thinking i found out about it from the Weight Watchers website which also bombarded me and others with targeted ads. So i downloaded and it works like a charm on most websites.

Oh one more thing. Just to put things in perspective....

When you download it, a small red icon appears in the upper left corner of your browser toolbar. I clicked on it this morning. It shows that in the 2 or 3 weeks of having it installed, it has blocked 5,488 ads for me.

Its free, btw, i dont see any downside. Everything works perfectly when i surf the net, just no ads.

Yes but do they make you put adblock stickers all over your car? and are you required to wear a ball cap with there logo on it… or appear in any offline ads for there product? just a wonder and a wander...
