So I am just under 48 hours out from having surgery to have my new AMS 800 AUS device installed. I am excited, and nervous at the same time. I will keep this thread open and updated from now until the activation of the device some long six plus weeks from now. I will let everyone know how I am doing and how the recovery is. I am very excited to begin this journey to dryness! Thanks in advance for all the support. All the best.

I hope you get a better model than the ones the manufacturer flogged Downunder /www.tga.gov.au/alert/ams-800-control-pump-artificial-urinary-control-system

Check with your URO that the model meets all the standards. Note, my government updated the information Oct 2014 (9 months ago)

Hi Paul,

Good luck with your surgery, it will be the best thing you could have done to end incontinence.

Two small tips at this late hour:

1) Bring a bed pillow for the ride home. My ride was 1 hour and I thought it would never end.

2) Buy 2 bags of frozen peas for the swelling, you will be glad you did.

Look forward to your future reporting. It has been exactly 1 year for me.

Thanks everyone...Great idea on the pillow it's 1-1.5 hours drive home...just less than 15 hours till the big event...they moved my surgery up from 3 pm EST to 1 pm...which is good, that means I will be home sooner? My daughter has been tasked with purchasing two each of cheap ass frozen peas in the morning so that they are ready for my return...my son is even taking the day off from school to hang out with my wife at the hospital, they are both great kids! Thanks Ichabod I'll text you when I am home tomorrow love Ya too.

2 hours until departure, check in at 11 surgery at 1. More than a little anxious, sure didn't sleep very well, and already hungry! Probably won't update anything until we get home later tonight! Thanks again to everyone.

Paul's surgery went well. He's in recovery now and the surgeon already said he could go home tonight, if he's up for it.

They ended up keeping him over night, but he's doing well. He's eating and not being shy about asking for pain meds.

Well, I am home! Spent the night in the hospital, doing good. In some pain but pretty tolerable with meds. The drive home sucked 1.5 hours, but resting nicely in my recliner feet up and peas between my legs. The upper incision hurts the most. Scanned my bladder a few times empting well, leaked all over myself between 0100 and 0400, everything soaked, but in this case it's a good thing. Time to a nap....more to follow

Welcome home Paul!

Keep one bag of peas in the freezer at all times and rotate.
My surgeon told me to take Aleve PM at night for pain and sleep. It helped.

Now the real countdown begins, 6 weeks until activation!!

Yeah she's an awesome young woman!

Well first night down with the new hardware I stalled. Went OK, up a few times to go pee, switched peas when the kids came home from a party at 12:30...showered this am and did a few laps around the kitchen, set breakfast and now back in my recliner, with peas in place. Things are fairly swollen, but not near as bad as I expected. Small bruise on my butt and about the size of a silver dollar on my balls. Shower felt great. So far do good.

The day after my AUS was installed, I panicked and wondered which side did my surgeon put the controller? I am right handed and felt it would be harder to use if it was installed on the left side.

After searching through the swelling I found it was located on the right side. Oh what a relief. On my first visit to the doctor I asked him why he chose the right side? He said most people are right handed so that is where he usually installs it.

I couldn't believe I left that up to chance and didn't discuss it with him before hand.

Bill,

I spoke to my Uro prior to surgery and he asked me if I was right handed...my switch is on the right. My swelling isn't too bad can actually touch things, much better than I anticipated. Approaching the 72 hour post surgery Mark and so far do good. Still sore and bruised...waiting for that first BM, NOT looking forward to that. I just ordered a Medical alert bracket...

I have a medical ID necklace that looks like a dog tag.

Yeah, I never thought I would need one either.

After my DaVinci I was really scared waiting for the first BM but after it happened, no problem. With the AUS surgery, it was a lot easier even though you had that "low incision" everything came out fine.

My upper incision bothered me the most at first but as time went on, the lower incision made it difficult to sit. I sat on a "u" shaped neck pillow while driving and sitting in a recliner the first couple of weeks.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but we aren't getting much feedback from the guys so I am trying to keep you "bumped" to the top until the other guys join in. Your thread should help others coming down our path in the future so keep it up.

Thanks Bill and yes I agree that the upper incision is and has been much worse on the soreness scale for sure...but overall I am doing good. Did venture out with my wife last night to help her puck out and buy a smoker for an upcoming party, and that 1.5 hours about killed me,too much too long to soon.... Lesson learned!
