Squeamish about giving injection...

So last week hubby started on trimix. Worked like a charm in doctors office and first injection at home. I'm the injector as it is difficult for hubby to manage due to a bit of a belly and the post surgical retraction of our little friend. Here's the problem: the second injection did not go well. Husband winced and gasped so I withdrew the needle without injecting the trimix. It was a knee jerk reaction on my part. The first time I injected him he didn't even know when I poked him. This time surprised and scared me a little. We made another attempt a few moments later and AGAIN it hurt so no injection! What am I doing wrong? It was the left side this time. Same side the doctor did in the office (husband winced and gasped then too but I chalked it up to first time anxiety). We are going to have another go at it but I'd love some advice on minimizing pain...

Thing is, assuming you are in the right spot like you apparently were at 1st, once he has winced, it is all over with. The needle is past the skin, and that is by far the most painful part. So, again if you are pretty confident about the needle placement, maybe just go ahead an inject? Probably the needle will(or should be) be all the way in, with skin very close to the hub(where the metal part of the needle meets the plastic part), although depending on length of the needle and hubby's thickness there might be a little bit of metal needle not buried. If you are in where you are supposed to be, it should inject with about the same amount of force required as when you are injecting out into the air(IOW, very little force), so you can take a syringe, fill with water, leave the needle on of course, and practice to see how that feels as far as the required force/pressure(don't reuse on hubby of course). If it is harder(i.e. takes more force/pressure) to inject hubby than to inject out into the air, then you are in the wrong place and it probably won't work. Plus, if you see a bit of blood in the tip of the syringe, or of you are able to aspirate blood into the syringe(but you might pull it out trying to aspirate) that is a good sign. The spot you are wanting to inject(cavernosa) has dark venous blood in it, and it will fill up with even more blood once you correctly inject.

If you can find some sort of local anesthetic for the skin, that might be a good idea. Just be sure to clean off the skin well with alcohol after applying the anesthetic, immediately/last step before injecting. Good luck!

It certainly gives a bigger target making it easier to see and miss the surface veins. Also, I feel I am less likely to go in too far. Plus some think it will make it work better, because the ring- left on 5 mins or so- will keep it from draining out so fast, before it has had max effect. Seems logical, but don't know for sure. Downside is that, as it is already under pressure, when you take the needle out blood may try to run out the injection site more than usual. That happened to me the 1st time I used that technique. But usually some rapid, firm pressure- which you are supposed to do anyway- keeps it from really being a problem.

Wrap an ice pack in a towel and ice the injection site down before giving the injection, that helps to numb the area...and have him look away and not at you when giving the injection...
or go back to the doctors office and see if the nurses there can show you how to do the injections...

A magnifying glass might help with that problem...

Some refer to injections as painless, but that's not quite true. Like any needle stick there is usually a twinge or momentary pain depending on the needle size and the skill of the injector, but unless one has an extremely low pain threshold, the reward is worth a bit of discomfort.

I have experienced painless to uncomfortably painful injections, depending I believe, on what nerve endings in the penis are affected by the needle in its path. Once the needle is in, might as well inject and get the reward.

PeterDisAblard. We have 1/2 inch 30 gauge. Still summoning up the courage to have another go at it, plus have been inundated with company so there's not been a good moment to try again

See if you can get some 31G/ 5/8" needles, they are a bit more comfy so to speak. But as they are shorter, you will have to make sure they are in deep enough, to the hub and even dimpling the skin a tiny bit. Again just make sure it injects as easily as it does if you are just practicing injecting through that size needle into the air, and/or be able to draw some blood. (but you might pull it out trying to draw up blood so be careful with that)

But, really, I lot of this pain is psychological. It is mainly the idea that some one is about to jab a giant(LOL) needle into your little buddy. But with just a quick stab, with those tiny needles there is a minimal sting IMO. Especially if you are already pumped up a bit, to give a firm as well as bigger target-think of trying to inject a deflated balloon- without going through to the other side- as opposed to one with some air in it, separating the sides. I have read that the skin(where most of the pain receptors are) on the side of the penis is not very sensitive anyway. Quickly stick that same needle into the shoulder and you might not even feel it. And I don't think it is really all that much worse sticking on the side of Mr. Happy, except for his(i.e. Hubby's) head has him really dreading it.
