Coloplast Urinary Leg bags leaking HELP PLEASE!! (US - "Conveen")

I have had an awful time with Coloplast Simpla leg bags literally coming adrift (the short flexible tube pulling adrift from the legbag) and soaking me with urine VERY unpleasant and embarrassing. The company assure me this is unusual and don't have any other customer/patient complaining.

Of course I doubt that I am the ONLY one complaining and needless to say take this with a pinch of salt as this has happened to me too many times and its getting me down and past a joke, therefore as Coloplast does not have a Forum of their own I have arrived here to ask:

Have any readers experienced such a thing occurring to them? if so please say hello and let me know your experiences. Thank you.

Is it one defective bag or have you tried another one? If so, could you change brands? Your doctor can request a different kind.

Hello thank you, nice to have your interest.

This is an on-going problem over a twelve month period, I am an orchestral musician and several times I have had to leave the stage when in concert because the tube had parted from the bag you can imagine the embarrassment, but I can be dining, shopping it doesn't matter when/where suddenly I am soaked.

Coloplast are the UK's regular manufacturer/supplier, there is another bag a Bardia, this is "BOMBPROOF" but a terrible 'rough' design compared to Coloplast and regularly available to hospitals as their standard bag.

Is there any chance you can put a piece of adhesive tape over the connection? The foley catheters I used had press fits but I still taped them just in case. A leak would have been mortifying.

Hopefully David Purgatory will answer. He is an expert in catheter and bag usage, unfortunately.

Of course I can "modify" the bag but this, if the product is good quality and design should not be necessary. I have been Super Glue-ing the tube onto the bag but told by Coloplast this is 'unhygienic' and should be stopped. Unfortunately Its not possible to use tape as the tube pushes into a recess..

Yes leaks are mortifying and the number I have had in just the past 12 months are amazing I have lost count I have no skin feeling in the area of the bag therefore I don't get a warning it's burst. The last time in orchestra I was sitting on a light brown cloth seat so you can guess how embarrassing it is for me.

If David can help or suggest anything great however I need to find other users of Coloplast urinary bags to compare notes as I cannot believe I am the only user with this problem.

Coloplast used to have a big presence in the US market, but seem to have pulled back. They discontinued marketing of the products I used. I have not used that catheter model.

My leg bag experience was that the tube was too short, and the bag would pull on the tube with great discomfort. I don't recall the brand (5 years ago), but the tube was firmly plugged into the bag. It would have been almost impossible to have a disconnect. Having the drain clamp open up, that was a different story. Walking around in one wet shoe ....

It would seem that you could run a couple of turns of tape around the tube (above the connection), then extend the tape to the side of the bag as a preventer.

I take your thoughts and comments on board but unfortunately the design of the bag by Coloplast does not allow ANY method to further secure the tube to the bag with PVC tape, as I have previously described the tube goes into a recessed hole and the only way the tube can be secured is with Superglue or other adhesive.

The tube according to Coloplast is "supposed" to be "compressed" onto the rigid short tube and not possible to come apart.

I rest my case.

I looked up your product name. It does not match the US products, but I suspect it is the same as the US "Conveen" product, which I put into the "motorman's friend" category. The UK site has a much more detailed product description.

I did try "Conveen" that at the time. It was completely unreliable in general.

But there is enough open tube to rig a protector strip of tape. I tried that. You are not trying to tape the tube into the bag, just provide an external connection that would keep the tube from pulling tight against the seal.

But I dumped the idea of these after the first sample pack was gone. Not a reliable connection to a badly-shrunken willie.

My only suggestion would be if there is enough tubing to run a loop of tubing down the side of the bag and tape it there as a strain relief. That way any tugging would be on the part of the tube taped to the bag and not on the connector. You wouldn't be trying to tape the connection, just providing a strain relief so nothing would pull on it.

Unfortunately there is no actual 'tugging' occurring. The tube although short is secured by a staylock connector with ample free movement of the tube. Furthermore this happens even when I am stationary for several hours playing in orchestra as I have previously mentioned in this post.

I think it is, when the bag starts to fill and gets to a near full state pressure builds up in the bag causing strain to the tube to bag connection creating this eventual parting. Obviously this should not be possible as confirmed by Coloplast but the fact is 'it does', and I have sent several photographs to Coloplast showing the problem, but after 3 months they are still saying they are 'looking into it', believe me this is really getting me down hence my trying to find other users of the Simpla bag to discuss this matter.

Believe me if there was anything other than Superglue I would have tried it.

have you tried putting the bag on your calf and using an extension tube to run from the catheter to the bag. this way you can have the bag in a place that is much less likely to slip down and with the extension tube there is flexibility so there is not an immediate pull on the tubing every time you move. Hospitals don't seem to know that thigh mounted bags are maybe only useful if you are in a wheelchair? If your bag wearing situation will be long term then you should get a bag that has "button" holes and wide Velcro type elastic leg bands that have buttons on them. And the calf set up is much easier to empty the bag.

I am sorry forum members with respect I feel you are barking up the wrong tree. I am not looking for simple "fixes" to my problem as Superglue does the trick fine, I am looking for other "Simpla" bag users who have had a problem with THEIR bags.

Of course I am addressing mainly US users as it is, as far as I can tell, a U.S website, However I may be wrong. I cannot see UK users using this site BUT again I am probably wrong.

I have now passed this matter to a UK Government CONSUMER COMPLAINTS establishment who have taken on my complaint in the past few days so have my fingers crossed they will get it sorted quickly.

Maybe it's time to close this post but it would have been great to have had other Simpla users detail to pass on to them, never mind. I will leave it active until I get a positive reply from the Consumer Complaints.

Peter, I understand what you're looking for--other users who have similar experiences, and it appears that no one is chiming in. This is "primarily" a US site...most members here are in the US, but we do have members from all over.

I suppose I have to ask the obvious question...is this the only bag that is available to you? I'll completely understand if you respond that it's the only one that 'the system' will pay for. THAT is all too common here in the US.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, The UK "Simpla" appears to be the "Conveen" product here in the US. I did very extensive work with several PCa foundations to find supplies of incontinence products and items for long term catheter users.

The "Conveen" product, being a motorman's friend, does not fit well into the majority of situations I worked with. At the same time, Coloplast is not sold in most stores that will carry average lines. The line is expensive, and generally found in pharmacies that specialize in long-term care supplies. Outside of sample they sent me as an end user, I have never seen their products. And no where have I seen them for sale.

If you should find a user on this forum, I suspect it will be someone in a long term care situation.
