Hello

My husband was just diagnsosed on Wednesday. So we are still in the education stage.

PSA 6.6
Biopsy 11 out 12 samples 5%-30%
Gleason 6
T2c
DX Doc recommends surgery and radiation.

We will be getting a second opinion at MD Anderson in 3 weeks. confused
Hoping for a more whole body approach.

I am so happy to have found this site.

Hi and welcome!

I encourage you to read the "Newly diagnosed..." thread at the top of the page (the page with the list of all the threads).

MD Anderson, I'm sure you know, is a top-notch facility...but the thing to always keep in mind is that doctors in one specialty almost always recommend their own "flavor" of treatment.

Welcome and sorry you have to join the club. You are already well on your way as you are already seeking a second opinion at a top notch facility.

If you haven't already, a 2nd opinion of your biopsy is recommended. Sending to Bostwick or Dr Epstein. That is in the Newly diagnosed thread that Jack referenced.

Just know, you have a very favorable diagnosis, with many options before you. Don't rush to any one decision!

Welcome to HW, sorry you need to be here.

Do get the second opinion and learn all you can. I am sure you meant surgery OR radiation. No reason to do both.

The thing that is going to drive you both nuts is that at G6 you have all the options on the table: Surgery, radiation in all its forms (IMRT, SBRT, Brachy LDR, HDR) or Active Surveillance (i.e watch and wait).

The good news is you have time to make an informed choice as PC is slow growing and at G6 there is little chance of it spreading beyond the prostate.

Keep us updated on your progress and ask any questions you have.

Hi Tedswife, and Ted. Sorry you have to be here but we are glad you found the site too. This is one of my booked marked places I tend to look at everyday just for the vast tidbits of information. Sometimes I need the info, and sometimes I hope that I am not in the situation to need it, but it helps with my own education. Become your own expert and you will feel better about the conversations with the doctors. Good luck to you both and keep us updated. -JR

Yes I meant "OR". And his biopsy results were done by Bostwick Labs.

Certainly wouldn't want him to go through both. He has had a heck of year already with a 2 day hospitalization due to pit bull bites in August and then hernia surgery 2 weeks later.

Our daughter is getting married in 2 weeks which will be a much needed distraction until the 2nd opinion appt.

Far too early to determine treatment plans. In addition to the MDA consult, I suggest you have a second opinion on the biopsy slides by either Bostwick Labs or Epstein at Johns Hopkins. They are the only ones that dedicate their pathology practice to prostate work and are the best.

If you are truly low risk, as your initial information indicates, you will be well advised to take very seriously the probable and expected side effects of the various treatment options. They will all do well for cancer control, but can have significantly different levels of side effects. Generally, surgery and radiation combine for the worst side effects, so you have to be very diligent and careful in your choice.

The good news appears that he is low risk and should have many options available to provide the best possible outcome. Relax, breathe easily and have a very nice weekend.

Welcome to the forum. Try to get a room at the Rotary House at MDA if you need to stay overnight. It is very convenient and is part of the medical complex.  They stay booked so try soon.
