Admittedly off-topic, but it seems oddly appropriate, in a way, to mention and link the website below for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, what with the regrettable passings lately of a couple of pretty great rock-and-roll performers.

I had coincidentally come across the website below for the Hall recently in one of my late night webwanderings, and spent some time on it checking it out.

It's a pretty nice site, with, as one would expect, much good information about both rock music history and facts about many of the great performers. I learned a lot I didn't know just by looking through the site itself. Made me want to visit the place.

It looks like a great place to visit in person, although I'll probably never actually get there myself. (According to the site, admission is only $ 23.50 for adults, BTW)

Have any of you ever actually visited there? If so, please do share your impressions.

Guess they'll soon be setting up some special exhibits for David Bowie and Glenn Frey. cry

I've been there. When I was there, the top floor exhibit was all about John Lennon. It was very moving. The one-hit wonders room is pretty interesting - all those songs that we all remember, but we've forgotten many of the artists. The Jimmy Hendrix theater was great, and it was great to see all of Jerry Garcia's guitars. Lots of outfits worn by singers in their videos from the more modern era. Lots of really good stuff. Well worth the trip, IMO.

I live in Cleveland and I've never been there, but then I'm not that much of a rock and roll guy. I'm probably missing an interesting day though.

Yes. Been there and loved it. about 15 - 18 years ago my wife and I had a business along with a small staff, writing and publishing monthly subscription newsletters. We could never take vacations together because one of us had to always be around to manage the shop. But after a few years of my wife making frequent trips to England to check in with her aging mother and me having no vacations at all, I finally took a couple of cross-country vacation trips on my own. One year I went from my home base in Massachusetts to Cleveland to see the R&R Hall of Fame and then continued on to points west -- Iowa, Nebraska,
South Dakota, etc. I loved the R&R Hall of Fame -- at the time they had Janis Joplin's psychedelic painted Porsche. And I remember a 1940s GE radio on display there that is just like the one sitting on a shelf 8 feet away from me even now as I type these words (it has real tubes and it still works). I also toured the Great Lakes ship that was tied up as a museum next to the R&R hall of fame. I had a friend, a history professor, who had spent his summers as a youth as a deck hand on those Great Lakes ships. I'd also hoped to catch a Cleveland Indians game while I was passing through, but they were out of town. That was a shame because one of the best days ever of my life was going to a day game at Fenway Park in Boston with my daughter when she was home from college for the summer. We had seats on the third base line and watched the Red Sox beat Cleveland, but it would still have been a perfect day even if the score had gone the other way.

Going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be on everyone's BUCKET LIST!! We plan on taking two of our older Grandchildren this year.

It is interesting, educational, and fun for all ages. I am a Founding Member (not living in Ohio) and have been there 51 times! One thing to know is that it's not all Rock and Roll music. They feature the genres compromising the foundation of Rock and Roll: R&B, the Blues, Gospel, Jazz, Folk, and Traditional Pop. You can listen to your favorite artists and learn about their music. There are 2-3 films presented. We just saw the tribute to Dick Clark and "American Bandstand." Terrific!

In the same area is the Great Lakes ship that Bohemond mentioned. There is the Great Lakes Science Center (with IMAX), a tourist boat, and some great restaurants in The Flats. Outside of Cleveland is their zoo and the Rain Forest facility. There is so much to do there. We stay in Westlake, 15 minutes from downtown. They have a nice swimming area and a park. We need to find joy in our lives and this is a good place to start. (They do have wheelchairs available and a small lunch counter.)

-U2, Jagger, Fergie Gimme Shelter at 25th anniversary

Many, more. I love to watch the ceremonies.

Hello 81,I was there twice.Once with my wife on the way to Gettysburg,Pa.for a wedding.The second time,with my Son.He is a Navy Corpsman.He served a tour in the sand box with my Marines.Actually with the same grunt Unit I was in, in 1970.When he came back to Camp Pendelton,Calif.,I flew from Chicago to Cal to greet him.After visiting my old stomping grounds we car traveled from the West Coast to East coast where he is stationed now at Bethesda,Maryland.He is to redeloy as we speak.Geez!I had to include all of the above because yes we both visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and as Dad and Son both visited Gettysburg.He was blown away at the R&R hall and equally at Gettysburg.But I was mostly blown away at my road trip with my son across the USA.What a trip !
