Relevance of enlarged prostate?

My husband was dxd with PCa (G4+3, ?T3a) last month and we are currently researching treatment options. A recent letter from the urologist states his Prostate volume as 32 cc. I read that normal volume is 15cc so this is clearly enlarged. What is the significance of this and does it influence treatment options?

Katie, like everything else in PC, it depends. Others will chime in with better info soon. It's my understanding that brachytherapy (seed implant) is less effective in large prostates than in average size glands. How big is too big? That's the question, isn't it.

My understanding is that cc's and ml's are interchangeable. Mine was 28 ml's and my uro said it was small. I think a normal size for a 60yr is closer to 40 ml's. So I would think 32 cc's is on the small side.

Mine was enlarged. I chose surgery as primary treatment and spoke to 2 different surgeons. One was an expert in open Prostectomy and the other was an expert in Robotic Prostectomy. Both said my enlarged prostate would not be an issue, but I chose open simply because of the size of my prostate. I did not want to take a chance of enlarged gland bursting all that cancer inside me.

IMO, no physician would believe that 32 is a large prostate for a man of 60.

It also is not a size that would prohibit or preclude any form of treatment due to size.

Average size increases with age.

My urologist said I had a 197 g. prostate. He removed it robotically but never said that the size made anything more difficult about the surgery and I had no out of the ordinary issues with the recovery.

Kate, a 15cc prostate would be on the small side. Normal would be 25-30. Hubby's 32 is no big deal and should not preclude any of his treatment options.

I agree. That's not at all enlarged. It doesn't preclude any treatments.

I think that SIZE DOES MATTER as was said before by HALBERT. If you truly have an enlarged Prostate - over 40 CC that limits the type of RX (seeds). My prostate is 118cc and I am on Finesteride to reduce the size prior to treatment. But I think you can have HDRT but not LDRT....Some one else please confirm? Thanks Dave yeah

32cc is not too large in order to decide treatment. Seed brachy is not recommended for larfer prostates.

I went with robot surgery as my prostate was 126cc, and pushing into the bladder. SO far, happy with the decision, and recovering well...

Dave, have you looked into Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)? It is an outpatient procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. It reduces the prostate size by 85 percent. Two hospitals near me offer it, and I am now hearing of radiology practices across the country that are learning and offering ti.

AS thanks for replying, just saw this recently! Stupid question, I researched PAE a bit online. Isn't this treatment only if you have BPH and not PC?? confused

I think I found the answer (on a different AS advocate thread) that this procedure can help reduce prostate size prior to PC treatment. If anyone can add to this discussion, that would be helpful! Thanks, Dave yeah
