Suppose to be going on a cruise on April 1st. Lost my drivers license yesterday. Washington state takes 14 days to get a new one. Any suggestions

Long post lost to the system.

Look about an expedited passport. Will cost $150 or so, but might work.
Maybe an expediting service in your area?

I can get one in 6 days for new employees, if I choke up $200 and a face-to-face application at a local expediter.

Finding the DL sounds like your best bet. Where was the DL last seen?

Maybe some nice person will mail it back to you.

Is it possible to go to your local DMV and get a Washington State ID card? I think you could walk out with it same day...

Todd, perhaps you should go into the DMV office immediately and personally explain the situation. Maybe they can expedite this for you or provide you with a temporary license or state ID card as Lisa said. Don't let the bureaucracy ruin your cruise!

Call the Cruise company/travel agent. They deal with this and know what works. Cruise company should have contacts on weekend.

One possibility that I worked with my wife in the past.

Fly to Washington, DC, emergency passport issued in person on the spot, even on a weekend.

Cost me the flight there, and flight for her to meet me at departure airport for Germany.

Travel agent set it up, called her on the weekend. She was a long time pro, who knew the ropes.

This was in 1986, uncertain still available today, but imagine still available today, there must be some provision for emergency passport entrance on the weekend for various official reasons.

If you google

lost drivers license before cruise

(I didn't use quotes) you will get a surprisingly large number of hits for this, posted by people who found themselves in exactly your situation.

Maybe reading through some of those hits might help with ideas on what to do.

For example, I skimmed a few of them, and there was talk about birth certificates and/or "government issued photo IDs" possibly being acceptable. Things like that.

Another possible way to find a solution, go to:

which as a sister company to and owned by tripadvisor, is one of the better cruising forums.

Navigate to the specific cruise line, register and make a post on the forum for that line with specifics on the cruise.

Hopefully, someone will have specifics on the particular requirements and possibilities for satisfying.

Often, employees of various lines will respond to a question like this.

Can't hurt to try. At least may give you game plan to hit the ground running Mon AM.

I know you can get an expedited passport, although I think you have to show proof that you're leaving the country and sounds like you may not be leaving the country. The ideas about expedited licenses make sense as well. This can't be a completely unheard of situation.

Document requirements are stiff, but they promise to work with you -

Look over the requirements, bring everything you can, be there Monday morning. Let us know how it goes -

A few years ago we had a neighbor who discovered just a few days before a trip to Norway that her daughter's passport had expired. She made a trip to the federal building in Boston and was able to get an expedited passport in time for the trip. I don't know what it cost her, though I'm sure there was a price to pay for the rush service.

Today will tell the tale. My license could not be found. Today I will call the only 2 places I stopped on my way home Friday. I am cautiously optimistic about the first one because I actually used my drivers license there. The second one is a bit of a longshot. If by 9 AM today I have been unable to locate my drivers license to call the DMV hopefully there will be a way to expedite getting an actual drivers license. That is not possible I will defend call a passport agency the closest one is in Seattle

Hi Newton. You must be thinking of somebody else my brother. I was diagnosed metastatic stage 4. I never had surgery or radiation. My only treatment has been androgen deprivation therapy.


For everybody else, an update. I didn't have any luck finding my drivers license. This morning my last ditch effort and calling the people and places I had been on Friday before I realized it was missing were in vain this morning I called the United States passport agency in Seattle. I was able to get an appointment for 130 this afternoon. I told my boss I had the flu and left work after only two hours to make the 2 1/2 hour trip to Seattle. After three hours in the passport office and two more hours at the DMV. I may or may not have a passport before we leave

24 hours since applying for my passport and I have heard nothing. In this case, no news is good news. If I don't receive a call from them tomorrow then I can assume that my passport will be ready between two and three tomorrow afternoon. I will be able to pick it up between two and three on Wednesday or between eight and three On Thursday and Friday. Nothing like taking it right down to the wire. Apparently my life wasn't exciting enough so I had to make some drama on my own. Keeping my fingers crossed in Washington state, Todd
