One sister and her husband live in Mt. Pleasant on Shem Creek outside Charleston SC. Not evacuating. My 89 year old dad is in Jupiter, refused to leave when my brother and partner were forced to evacuate from their home in Tequesta and drove to their other home in TN. Dad and his lady friend are planning to ride it out in his home. My baby sister and her husband and three kids are a mile from the beach in Hobe Sound. Not evacuating. At first I thought it would be a sleepless night. Then I decided I only have room for one worry a night. That is reserved for my sweet husband finishing treatment in Sarasota. He offered to get my dad and drive him to my uncle's in Naples or bring him to Sarasota. Dad said no. As Purgatory said, they are adults and make their own choices. And will have to deal with the consequences. I'll probably be checking the weather channel all night despite my resolution not to worry. Going to be a long day at work tomorrow...

On the off chance it DOES come your way, here is what I learned after being directly hit with cyclone Marcia in Queensland (Aust).

Have CASH. (No power = no ATMs etc. )
Refuel your car, your mower, and anything that takes fuel asap. (No power = no bowsers)
Have your generator ready to go and plug in your fridge - everything else can wait.
Recharge ALL rechargeables, e.g. phones, tablets etc. (our towers etc., were knocked out so no telecommunications for a week).
Get LOTS and LOTS of dog food.... this was the first thing to run out here.
Buy dried/long life milk or any other substitute.
Tinned food is a must.
Tape up your windows. Ours would have blown in without this, and pull curtains across just in case windows DO blow in. Curtains will catch flying glass.

Buy a radio that works by winding. Ours also runs a torch as well. Took a lot of winding but we had news of the outside world, and some light.

Buy a small gas cooker and those butane cylinders. They use a tiny amount compared with big bbqs.

One thing I did not know.... you cannot easily syphon petrol out of modern cars!!!!

Hurricane Matthew has now moved North of us. We dodged the worse of the storm, as the eye stayed 60 miles off the Palm Beach Coast, only getting heavy rain and tropical force winds. Electric power went out late last night but came back on this AM. Sooooo happy about this as this is one of the worst results of Hurricanes. I had lost power for two weeks from one storm and one week from another Hurricane back in 2004.
Happy I didn't have to use the generator I bought after the 2004 storms.
Anyway we are safe, but areas North of us are getting it much worse.

We evacuated Hilton Head which looks like it's going to get whacked tonight. Just hope damage is not catastrophic.

Good to hear you are both out of Matthew's path. Best wishes for minimal.or no damage Bob. My eldest is named Matthew. He is usually pretty easy going.

We did fairly well in Martin County- just some branches down. We were very lucky. Very hard to hear about flooding, loss of life and damage in Haiti and the Carolinas.

Had to postpone my appointment with Dr. Patel on Friday. We were to discuss biopsy results. Not sure when this will be rescheduled.

Hey Bobby Mac,
I have not been on HW for awhile now but decided to check in tonight.
I see you live in Boynton Beach, so do I!!!

We had plans to go to California for 6 months prior to the hurricane. Lucky for us but lots of anxiety
over what might happen while we were gone. t looks like that little turn to the east helped us out in PB County.

I have been an Oakland Raider fan for 44 years, it was on my bucket list to see them play at home before they move from Oakland.

Email me, if you would like maybe we can meet over coffee in town and have a little GFMPH visit!
