Hi everyone

Happy holidays. I hope you are all well.

I have been awol for some time, as my husband had an open Rp on November 10th. Overall he's doing well. A few bumps in the road in his healing in the initial weeks. The catheter wouldn't come out and had to be burst externally through a guided ultrasound. Then his stitches opened up but have now healed well with the help of some professional wound care.

Went for the follow up appointment last week and all seems to be good as per the pathology report. Clear margins, no need for radiation at present.

This week he has noticed a decrease in the stream of urine. Not in terms of volume, but more so pressure. Along with that he is experiencing nocturnal penile pain and what he describes as urethral pain and rectal itching. He doesn't appear to have a UTI.

Any thoughts/similar experiences?

penile pain is normal....tho mine was nocturnal/diurnal.l...mine lasted 8 months...i also had pressure with normal stream...cant remember how long that lasted...rectal itching I did not have...could be anything...a drug store could help with that or a dermatolgist....

Keep an eye on the stream. If it gets worse - call your URO.

The rectal itching could be a yeast infection. (Yes, men get them, too.) Each time I've had a surgical procedure that required a catheter, I had them. I think that I may have been reacting to one of the antiseptics they used on me in surgical prep. I used an anti-fungal to settle mine down (Lotrimin).

If his itch is internal rather than external, I wouldn't use the anti-fungal. In that case, I'd talk to the doc. He could have internal hemorrhoids that have gotten irritated from the possible extra pressure he may have experienced in the days immediately after surgery. I'd have him see a doc, if the itch is internal.

Everyone is different and every surgeon is different. I had no complications from open RP. Cath out in 13 days, golf in 21 days.

Thank you all for your feedback. I think he will follow up with his urologist re the decreased urine stream.

Sorry to hear you're having problems. Sadly, it's part of the risks for RP. Most do fine, but some have problems. It can take awhile to fully heal.

There could be some scaring happening. Your URO should be able to sort it out.

Above all, keep telling the doctor of the problems your having.

Do keep us updated on what the URO tells you,
