Reading all these posts I'm kind of second guessing my decision to go with radiation treatment, perhaps I should have picked surgery where after one day you're done with it. I wish there was a feature on this site, like on facebook, where I could reply to each post individually but don't see one. Anyway, it's too late to turn back now, so in two days at 9:30 AM we begin. I was told to drink 8 ounces of water every day thirty minutes before the procedure starts. So they go with the full bladder/empty rectum option. They did the tattoo marker thing but I actually don't see any marks on my body. The tech is a good looking young woman (which doesn't hurt) who seems very capable and experienced. I also saw a nurse who went through all the possible side effects, suggested diet, and sent me off with a booklet of instructions. It is suggested that I take Gas X, Imodium, and Advil, though not sure if I should do it daily or on a need to basis. As far as tiredness I hope I can still go on my walks and bowl every Wednesday in my league. Having sex is not a concern right now because, (except with myself), I haven't had any action in years. But I still get erections and hope that continues to be the case.
Im very impressed with the knowledge you all have on this subject and ashamed that I don't know a tenth of what you guys do. Perhaps I should have been more pro-active but, since I was diagnosed with PC a little over a year ago, I was fine with monitoring the disease with periodical biopsies. When my Gleason count went from 6 to 7, my urologist suggested I take some action.
I'm in the process of changing urologists because I feel that the guy I had didn't spend enough time explaining stuff to me. Seems like he was always in a hurry. On the last visit I had to wait one hour and ten minutes for a five minute visit. I'm on medicare so I have to go with whomever my general practitioner chooses for me.
I'm to pay forty bucks for each radiation treatment plus co-pay for a weekly doctor consultation, for a total cost of $1800.00 or so. I'm not rich but I guess I can swing it and obviously there's nothing more important than one's health.
As I stated previously I also suffer from UC and diabetes but feel fine, strong, and have no symptoms whatsoever of anything. I think I will have problems with the suggested diet, which emphasizes rice, juices, toast, among others, because while one thing is good for one disease it's not so great for another. Being Italian, I love pizza, lasagna, spaghetti, etc. It will require some kind of balancing act on my part to satisfy all my specialists in that regard.
Finally, some of the side effects described in this thread are pretty scary and awful so of course I hope not to suffer too much because of them.
