It's likely new. UTIs tend to have the symptoms you described earlier today. Have you had those symptoms before? Have they done urine tests before?

Take the antibiotics and drink plenty of water.

It will be interesting to see what happens to your PSA. Sometimes a course of antibiotics will bring down your PSA level. If that's true, then you might be looking at other reasons for your high PSA.

So many things can raise PSA, PC is very low on the list. The positive DRE is still a concern. Sadly, you're now back to the waiting game. Everything now is just speculation. Best to just wait and see what things are like after the UTI clears. Not easy, I know, but this takes time and your stuck waiting.

UTI's can be difficult to detect sometimes so it's not surprising. Sometimes there are little to no symptoms especially for men. Did you get a urinalysis done as part of your last batch of recent tests? Either way, this is a GOOD thing I think, so breathe a sigh of temporary relief (even if it burns when you pee LOL), and revisit this when you get your next PSA test prior to the scheduled biopsy.

In the results of your CT scan, did they state the size of your prostate? Many years ago I had some of the same symptoms you had (I had flank pain, pain on urination, 1 or 2 instances of blood in the urine, etc.). At the time they did a cystoscopy to look for stones. Their conclusion was that this was all due to BPH. I was in my early 50's at the time, but my PSA was normal.

So - might you have BPH (benign enlarged prostate)? If your prostate is enlarged, it can raise PSA just because there is more prostate tissue to generate PSA. An enlarged prostate can also cause issues in urination. Not sure about other pains, but prostate infections can do those.

Just back from the Dr. and unfortunately didn't get the news I was hoping for. PSA went from 6.7 to 6.9 and after the UTI and antibiotics its up to 7.05. So now it's onto the biopsy. Fingers crossed, but not feeling to confident.

That's not what you wanted.

Even if the worst is found, you have plenty of options. None fun to do, but every chance for a good outcome.

Yeah - that week of waiting will be one of the worst weeks of the process. It was for me, and I didn't stress much about it because I sort of expected my positive finding and had already been reading here.

One thing about that biopsy. If you, as most of us did, will have the "standard" trans-rectal biopsy (where they use an ultrasound probe in the rectum and insert the biopsy needle through a sleeve in the probe), be sure to ask IN ADVANCE that your urologist use a periprostatic nerve block for the procedure. This is not "just a couple of shots of stuff" - it is a very carefully placed couple of shots of lidocaine that completely blocks any pain from the biopsy needles. This is important. It will make the difference between a highly unpleasant (possibly quite painful) procedure and a simply embarrassing procedure. I had the nerve block, and my biopsy was a complete non-issue. I took my wife out to lunch about an hour after it, and went back to work later in that afternoon.

Another thing to ask the uro about is whether his office ordinarily takes a rectal swab to test for bacteria in the individual patient's rectum which may be resistant to the standard Cipro usually administered. If your body hosts bacteria resistant to Cipro, they would then administer additional antibiotics (orally or by injection) to minimize any chance of infection due to the biopsy needle going through the rectal wall into the prostate. This one won't change how it feels during the procedure, but it could change how you feel in the days thereafter.

Above all, try to remain calm and keep your sense of humor. Also, be prepared to leave your sense of dignity at home - you won't get to use it much in these processes (or in treatment, for that matter). Think of the biopsy as just an unpleasant procedure to be endured in order to get the information you and your doctors need to know how to proceed.

Also, be very SURE to come back here once you get your biopsy results. If, as I did, you receive unwanted news in the "results" meeting, do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT make any treatment decisions or commitments at that meeting. No matter what the results may be, you have time (from a week or two all the way to possibly many months, or even years) to decide what you want to do. I fear that many men are shocked (or pushed) into decisions at these "results" meetings, and follow treatment paths that later turn out to be just one of several alternatives. . . and that another of those alternatives may actually have been a better choice.

Mr. BBall, first of all good luck with the biopsy. Hopefully it will be negative and your stay with us will be short. Now, let me tell you what worked for me re the biopsy results (obviously this may not be for you). It usually does not take long for the results to be completed so you may not want to wait for the appointment in one week. What I did was get the results by telephone BEFORE an appointment. That way I could research the heck out of it and calm down a bit BEFORE sitting down with the doc.

By doing this I was well prepared with my questions and so was my wife. It got me off to a good start on looking at treatment options. Anyway, that approach worked for me.

Thanks halbert! Yikes, I'll be sure to ask for more lube. Glad to hear it's only a few minutes. After that the week of waiting I'm guessing will drag on quite a bit.

Thanks InTheShop. I've waited 3 months at this point, so what's another week. Having answers will be good and allow me to move forward and not feel stuck like I have for the past few months. Thanks again for the support!
