Chemo/ Washing the mouth/ Teeth falling...

Hi there all

Anyone here had any bad experience during chemo with his mouth mucous who care to share, please?
My father is kind of upset after losing some teeth during hormonal therapy. He had never had bad teeth in his mouth at 68 (such neat, white beautiful teeth he had which he was proud of, alas...), it was only after his diagnosis and HT that he started having issues with them.
The thing is that he is so sad about it (I must add I can relate to him, losing our teeth is not fun at all) that he stops washing his mouth after the chemo sessions. He is assuming this mouth washing thing is just to save his teeth. I have been trying to explain to him, but he is kind of stuborn these days.
I am really worried about him.

Hi Farz53

During chemo the one nurse advised me after every meal to take 4 - 5 tablespoons of plain yogurt and swish it around your mouth. I forget the explanation to this I think it had to do with bacteria. Also to rinse your mouth at least twice daily with Biotene mouthwash this from my dentist. I was not to floss anymore times that what I had prior to chemo.

I do remember getting lax on the above procedure for a couple of days and seeing yellow spots starting on my tongue. As soon as I restarted the above procedure it was all good again.

I did get some pain in my mouth and went to the dentist to find out it was an gum infection and required Amoxicillin for 10 days.

I don't know but Ive had bad dreams where I lose all my teeth...but then again I have dreams where I can fly...but there are always hi tension wires I need to clear...it ain't easy...with no teeth;;;

Farz - your dad didn't happen to get a Prolia injection along with his HT, did he?

@RobLee: He has had perostactomy+orchiectomy+ Chemo and consequently his Test. level is very low.

I asked about his HT because hypogonadism can lead to severe osteoperosis and sometimes Prolia injections are recommended. However one of the most frightening side effects of Prolia is osteonecrosis of the jaw and resulting tooth loss.

@RobLee: He doesn't take any hormone now, since his T level is very low. They may use some hormones in his chemo cocktail but I don't know the details...

You may want to ask his doctor if anything was administered for his bones or for osteoporosis.
But of course the damage is already done, so it would not make any difference now.

Really sorry to hear of the issues your dad is experiencing. Were there any symptoms prior to your Dad's teeth loss?

You mentioned he had an orchiectomy. If so, he is on permanent "hormone therapy", with very low testosterone. That's what "hormone therapy" is, actually the elimination of testosterone. We don't take any hormones, we take drugs that stop that key hormone. By surgery, he no longer needs to take any drugs to suppress his testosterone. Without testicles, his body produces very little of it.

The lack of testosterone can lead to bone density problems. I'm not sure if that directly relates to tooth loss or not though.

Bone/joint building may help.

Simple daily doses of Glucosamine plus MSM would be my suggestion (make sure you avoid Chondroitin as that promotes cancer growth) along with flossing and regular visits to the dentist.

@:mr bill: No syndroms AT ALL before diagnosis, just problem in urination.
@ Redwing57: So I was right that he doesn't need any hormon injection, right? Do you think he will be fine with this treatment? His surgon is the third best prostate surgon of the world. This was his opinion and my father accepted to do the surgery.
His PSA was high to sky before surgery and it started going down right after.

@ GaryLK: Thanks so much indeed, but I heard Glucosamine may encourage the chance of diabetes (?)
