Question re tumour (or tumor as you guys spell it!) volume

Hi folks

Hope this finds you all doing well.

Just a quick question, as I've realised I might have misunderstood GG's pathology report, or at least got it a bit wrong, so hoping you can help me clear this up. I'm at work right now, and haven't got it in front of me, so I'll go from memory.

The report stated that his prostate weighed 49g. It said his tumour/tumor was 4.9cc. Does that mean cubic centimetres? Surely not?! If so, his cancer would have been bigger than a golf ball - something I find very difficult to believe.

I just guessed it occupied 10% of his prostate, because I saw the 49g and 4.9cc - am I right - or way off the mark?

Would appreciate a helping hand to decipher if anyone might be kind enough.

Hi Jaybee-

Yes 4.9 cubic centimeters is indeed 10% of 49g prostate. Tissue is mostly water, so it's roughly 1g per cc. If the tumour (as you misspell it ) were spherical, it would have a radius of 1.05 cm, which would make for a very small golf ball. In the US, golf balls are twice that radius, but I know that everything is bigger in the US. smilewinkgrin

Thanks a million Allen! That sure would make for an interesting round of golf! You'd probably need sniffer dogs to find the balls. Eh ehheh.

A golf ball is about 30 cc. A garden pea is lager than 1 cc. So you had a tumour the size of a few peas.
