A week before my Fusion Prostate Biopsy

I had a PSA test a week before my biopsy. It dropped down to 6.1 from a high of 7.1 in April. If it was cancer shouldn’t it have risen a bit rather than going down?

I intentionally took anti-inflammatory drugs like fish oil, vitamin D (4000 per day) and Ibuprofen assuming that if it was prostatitis I could reduce my PSA. It looks like I was successful. In hindsight if I’d taken 2 Aspirin instead of half an Ibuprofen the night before I might have dropped it even further.

Are you having any BPH symptoms? How big is the prostate? There is this place with PSAs bouncing around between around 3 to maybe 6-7 ish where it might be BPH or not or who knows. This might be the land of negative biopsy results. Or not. I think they told me they would scan with the ultrasound and or MRI and only pull the trigger if there was a suspicious area on the screen. And there are some other lab tests. There is a great Venn diagram in a journal article I forgot to bookmark that shows the odds based on PSA. If they find a spot the modern treatments are pretty good - so it is a manageable nuisance in either case.

PSA can fluctuate due to many things One reading does not make a trend. Hangin here and the biopsy will give you concrete info. Denis

What were the specifics of your MRI? What is your Free PSA?

My PSA was all over the map from 2009 until 2017. It went over 4.0 at that time, and then every six months it would sometimes jump up over a full point or fall by even more than a point. It had the docs confused because it didn't really follow a trend (my free PSA kept rising though) -- I ended up having four biopsies and an MRI between the years 2009 and 2012. From 2012 through 2016 it leveled off in the high 5/low 6 range, but then jumped to 7.7 in December 2016 and then fell to fell to 6.1 in May 2017. The doctor ordered an MRI (which proved unremarkable/inconclusive - PI-RADS 3), and then ordered a biopsy -- this fifth biopsy finally revealed G6 in two cores.

As your PSA is in that "gray" zone -- 4-10 -- the biopsy is probably the best move at this point as that's the only procedure that can give you a definitive diagnosis. Good luck to you!

A lot has happened in the past year.

I didn't have BPH and my prostate size was between 30cc and 36cc.

I was diagnosed with GS8 nearly a year ago and chose two forms of radiation.
