Why is an MRI TRUS biopsy better than a TRUS biopsy alone?

It depends on the situation. A TRUS biopsy is adequate for a first biopsy because the probability of cancer is so low. However, if suspicion remains afterwards,mpMRI+systematic cores is a good idea. Or, if one really wants to be sure, a saturation biopsy. That is also true for a confirmatory biopsy for men on active surveillance.

My first biopsy was a saturation biopsy with 2 of 32 cores showing pc at a 3+3=6 gleason.
My second biopsy was a 12 core with 2 core still a gleason 6. Both of those biopsies were under general sedation.

My third biopsy was the MRI Trus with only valium and the local nerve block. It was 8 cores with 0 cores showing pc. What got me past my fears of not being sedated was the value and accuracy of the MRI guided Trus. Thanks TA for your thoughts. Not sure where my signature went smile .
