Some good... some bad news...

Hi all,

First the good news... my PSA, which had bounced to 3.1 from 2.0 upon last reading is 1.2. So things are going well on my PSA front. So I need to update my signature.

Now the bad news... My wife Patty has received some bad news. The gingivitis she has been fighting since last November has turned out to be oral squamous cell cancer. There will be a long and involved process to recovery of this. She will at least need major oral surgery and reconstruction of her jaw using a good portion of her fibula as a source of the replacement bone. We don't know the full staging yet as we are waiting for insurance approvals so that we can proceed with imaging, which is the next step. Depending upon those results will determine the extent of surgery and any possible radiation and chemo. Chemo being the least likely treatment.

I'm particularity concerned because of the length of time that this was misdiagnosed as the most important issue is timely diagnoses.

If any of you know of an equivalent forum for oral squamous cell cancer, please kindly let me know.

good news on the PSA

So sorry to hear about your wife. That just sucks. I don't know anything about that kind of cancer. Doesn't sound like an easy treatment.

Here's hoping it gets resolved soon.

I am really sorry to hear about your wife's case. It sounds like her treatment path will be quite an ordeal, and so I wish her—and you—strength for the journey.

Tim,

That is really awful news on your wife's illness. I am sure you will be a pillar for her in the coming months. Thankfully, your own situation seems to be coming along-- so you can put that part aside and attend to your wife's.

I have seen in my life many instances of the old saw that we never get loaded up with more than we can handle. Hope that is true for you two also. Really wish the best outcomes for you and family.

I'm very sorry -- it sounds like quite an ordeal. I'm awed and amazed that they can reconstruct it using fibula bone - do they somehow fill in the section they remove? My prayers are with her.

So very sorry to hear of your wife's unfortunate diagnosis. Please know that there will be many here who will pray for her and hope the best for her, and for you.

I don't see an oral cancer forum here on Healingwell, but if you google

oral squamous cell chat rooms

the resulting display lists a number of what look like possibly useful forums that deal with this area. In particular:

look like possibilities.

These are just a couple of examples of what may be out there, but perhaps you would like to look at these as a start, and see if either of them would be helpful.

Sorry to hear about your wife. I trust you will find some good resources for information and excellent treatment.

I know anecdotes are nothing more than "hearsay", but I know of two people recently diagnosed and treated for oral cancers. I know it was tough, but both are doing fine and cancer free now.

Hope your wife does well.

Hi Tennis Player and others...

We went to Boston Medical Center on Wednesday (4/25/18) and are going for a second opinion to Dana Farber on Thursday (5/3/18) and Friday...

I have a good feeling about Dana Farber and things already seem to be moving along quite fast there.
