Hello Ted,
Welcome to the forum. Sorry you find
yourself here but glad you found
us. Hope we can help.
When you talk to your urologist about
your treatment options bear in mind that urologists are generally surgeons. Surgery is what the do. It's what they like. They know all the latest techniques, gadgets and doodads. If they were diagnosed with prostate cancer they'd probably go looking for another good surgeon to fix them up. They love their hammer and the world looks like a nail to them.
There's nothing wrong with that. If you will excuse the mixing of metaphors, when you go to a Cadillac dealership you gotta expect the guy there will try to sell you a Cadillac. That doesn't mean you have to
buy a Cadillac. It's up to you to shop around.
No matter what your urologist tells you you will want to talk to some radiation doctors. Be sure to have several different kinds of radiation therapists on your dance card. Try to include someone who does SBRT and maybe one for High Dose Rate Brachytherapy. Recent studies have shown those treatments pulling ahead in terms of disease control and side effects, but maybe that means the surgeons need to do some more studies. All of the treatment modes get better every year. This means that the ones with the most recent research tend to look better by comparison. Currently surgeons have some catching up to do.
If you tell us where you live (nearest big city) we might be able to recommend some doctors in your area we have experience with.
We have a a thread where we keep a roster of high-gleason/high-risk members. Mostly it is Gleason 9 guys like you (and me) but we have a few Gleason 10 members, too. I've added your name. Here's a link:
