Interesting thought relating ED recovery and cycling, I cycle a lot and mentioned to my wife as I have been very slow recovering from ED, and mentioned I might have to choose between her and my bikes! She replied " your helmet is over there"

Good luck with the surgery. I did not wait three months before getting back on the bike. Your body will give you a good sense of when you can resume different activities. I considered getting a nose-less saddle but in the end didn't feel I needed one. I just angled my current saddle down some and that relieved pressure on a very sensitive spot. With cycling and other activities, you should resume them gradually. My first ride post-surgery may have lasted about ten minutes. It felt good and I could have gone longer, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't causing any damage. The first ride was fine (actually it felt wonderful), and then I just worked up from there.

Did not have surgery at all...... Opted for SBRT instead and was back out on my mountain bike right after treatment ended last July. I live in southeast GA right now and the weather here makes biking fairly comfortable all year. And my plan is to move back to Florida (I'm a native Floridian). Have had no issues other than going over the handlebars a couple times usually due to mudholes and I use my mountain bike (hardtail) on the road and off. My average distance is about 10-12 miles. I had no idea that so many of you guys are bikers...... That's really great! It's a fantastic sport and wonderful for overall physical conditioning for us old geezers..... smilewinkgrin

This thread is a little old.

But are there any new bike riding stories or updates to be had on your experiences with bike riding post prostrate surgery? I'm 67 and having surgery in August. I ride a lot and will miss bike riding after surgery during the healing process.

My surgery was in November (winter) so that solved the obvious problem. I did not get on an exercise bike for 2 months post-op and found it uncomfortable right away so I moved to an elliptical machine. I did get used to it after a short while and had no issues with bike riding the next spring/summer although I do not have a narrow bike seat which might make a small difference. Adjusting the seat can help a little also.

I might point out that sitting on a hard chair and various other chairs/seats after surgery is uncomfortable for a while so the last thing you are thinking about is getting on a bike seat. It all sorts it self out over time and how hard you want to push it. In some ways, it is like you never rode and you have to get your butt conditioned for the seat again with some short trial runs at first. This is how I feel every spring now when I get the bike out.

Even though I’m an SBRT guy I thought I’d chime in. During my five treatment sessions my RO suggested I remain as active as possible. I had given up bike riding for fear of crashing following three total joint replacements several years ago and prior to RT. I replaced my outdoor rides with aggressive spinning classes at our local YMCA. I was able to maintain my normal spinning classes even on treatment days. I did have some minor soreness on my perineal area that resolved quickly following RT. I spin about 300 miles/month to maintain cardio. My RO says he sees active exercise guys do much better with all the cancers he treats.

April 2013, had RP. Not robotic, it was old fashioned slash and gash. Started walking couple of days after surgery for a month. Then, because we had booked a bike tour in Europe leaving July 6th for 2 months, started riding the touring bike late May until we left for Europe. Lots of hills because we usually try to follow many of the popular climbs of the "Tour".

That summer we rode 3800 km and I think 36,000 m, staying in a small tent 55 nights in a row. My bike fully loaded, 85lbs, wife 75lbs.

Surgery no problems. Take it easy for awhile walking, then get on the bike and giver.

Thanks Dave and everyone. I am inpsired by these kinds of comments and stories. I plan to giver.. and then some smile I'm 67 and I work full time yet and ride about 40 to 50 miles per week. I'm not ready to throw in the towel.

I didn't start riding a bike again until about two months after open surgery, but I was being overly cautious. You may experience some stress incontinence. I used small absorbent pads in my briefs for about six months. I had a comfortable gel bike seat cover, which helped.
