Dan had his second HDR brachy today. We are now done with treatment and can go home.
Because there has been some “trash talking” of brachy here lately I am going to relate Dan’s
experience. He was taken into a pre-op are where his IV was placed and his IV antiobics were given.

From there he went into a procedure room where the catheters were placed. Propofol, fentanyl and versed were used. He was taken to a holding area while the radiation was developed. He was then in the radiation delivery room for maybe 20 minutes.
Then back to holding area where all catheters were removed.
He did have some pain. And, he passed some blood clots. He went in at 8am and we were home at noon.
He has taken no pain meds. He is using “peas” and taking azo with the rapaflo.

When I first came to this site I believed surgery was the only thing that would save dan’s life. That would have been a horrible decision imo.

Thanks to all you guys for your help, guidance and concern. We are grateful.

Congrats! I know there were heart concerns so I looked back at older threads and saw that Dan was cleared for his new procedure about a week ago. I had missed that posting so I was (pleasantly) surprised when I read this.

I'm sure he'll do well. Promise to keep us posted!

Great report Kit. Dan will do very well. He was in very good hands nd I trust Nurse Carolyn is his favorite.

The next two weeks will be his worst as he will be sore. Have him sit in a pillow and no hard chairs. Sitting on some ice will help. He will be back to normal in no time and the cancer control will be great.

This is very similar to my experience. My doc had me double up on Azo and I had no burning the second time. I did have some urinary urgency for about a week. All systems are normal now. Congrats on being on the other side.

Thanks for the update, have been following your journey closely. I am in final stages of planning my treatment with Dr. McCord. My latest biopsy results are very similar to Dans. I am curious about the hormone therapy part of your treatment. Was the hormone therapy optional or was it part of Dr. McCord’s protical? Also, how many months will Dan be on HT? Thanks in advance for your help and congratulations on finishing the radiation portion of your treatment. Safe travels home -regards MJ

Dr. McCord sent us to a urologist- Dr. Ellis. Ellis said “doing it by the book” Dan should have 6 months of adt. I asked for eligard because of some things I had read here? Ellis had Dan take two weeks of casodex and a week after he started casodex he had an injection of Eligard. Ellis said he was an “Eligard guy”.
I think McCord was on the fence about ht for Dan. We asked him to send us to a urologist who would at least entertain the idea of ht. I realize Dan had the Eligard during treatment and that is not “normal” but I am so glad he had it. Dan just started having hot flashes. McCord and his staff will take good care of you.

There is no evidence that adding hormone therapy improve the outcomes of brachy boost therapy for intermediate risk patients.

Both the urologist and Ro we saw in Little Rock recommended HT. The surgeon also recommended surgery and told us Dan would need salvage radiation.
Dr. McCord told us that he would have given Dan an injection if we had to wait any longer
than July for treatment.
We did not “shop around”. We had to see a urologist here in Atlanta- he places the catheters for the HDR Brachy. We just asked McCord if we could speak with someone who
would talk to us about options. Ellis said that “by the book” Dan should have 6 months of HT.
As I said, Ellis said “I am an eligard guy”. I had read an article you posted and I thought that long term ADT
wasn’t helpful but possibly 4 months?
McCord said either way was fine with him?
TA, I just think 6 months of eligard won’t hurt him?
I am just glad this is almost over and we can go home.
