Typhoon Yutu is fixing to hit Saipan in 24-36 hours with 125 mph winds. We got slammed by a supertyphoon three years ago, so we know the drill. I’ll report back when we have the all clear.

The great thing about this storm’s name is if you google typhoon Yutu it “corrects” the search to typhoon YouTube.

Florida guy here, as are a number of us here on the forum.

We guys from the "sunshine state" ("hurricane state"?) are glad to hear that you know the "drill," and thus likely to know what to do (and not do) when the wind starts to howl and the trees begin to bend.

Weather through it, and then get back to tell us that all went well!

yutu...a yeti that surfs...yep the drill...seems like the Globe is learning the drill....mother nature is not a happy camper...its a lot deeper than warming....take care of yourselves/...

At first I read that as **** Juice. Oh well. Actually, we did stock up on beer.
It’s now a supertyphoon, expected to pass just south of Saipan. Winds currently ca. 50 mph, we’re told to expect 150+ within eight hours. We’ve closed all the storm shutters and we’re ready to ride it out.

Stay dry and beered. Still remember Camille on the Mississippi Gulf Coast 50 years ago,
so lots of empathy. Those are strong winds you’re facing.

Saipan is close and just north of the projected path of Yutu's eye.

The strongest, most damaging winds of a hurricane/typhoon are in the eyewall and the right-front quadrant...which would be close and just north of the eye.

In low laying areas, it's the water/storm surge that typically does even more damage than the wind.

This is a big one for Saipan. I offer my prayers for your safety...hope that you have high ground...

The eye is passing about 15 miles south of our house as I type. Never been through a storm this strong before. Mighty scary. Good thing we’ve got storm shutters. And a battery pack for the modem, so we’re still connected.
NWS says it’s Category 5, the strongest typhoon to hit the Marianas since 1962. Comparable to Hurricane Michael.
The worst should be over in two hours. I’ll report back.

Adding to the challenge, Saipan Paradise's last post was in the later-morning hours here, but it was around 1am there then. Conditions were forecasted to improve after 3am...but no doubt he's pulling an all-nighter (perhaps the least of the worries).

We're safe, but the house is destroyed. And not only ours. We'll be preoccupied with other stuff for a while. I'll check in again when I can.
