Lupron injection site lameness

Has anyone else had a lupron side effect which entails something like a pulled muscle near injection site? I had first and only lupron injection about 6 weeks ago. Annoyingly I have had some lameness in that leg now. As I am a runner, it's effecting my game! Thinking of just getting an Orchiectomy(gonadectomy) instead of the lupron.

My Lupron is given in the butt (close to lower back) no problem at all just a little,soreness that lasts a couple of days. Firmagon, on the other hand killed me for 3-4 days, that was given in the abdomen. I wonder if it’s the site injection, not the drug, that makes the difference.

I've only had one Lupron (hip) injection that hurt more than a day, and that was because I drew a nurse who didn't know what she was doing. It has to be near perfect.

I am getting the lupron shot every 4 months. My leg on the right side is weak, and putting on my left sock is risky unless I support somehow. Otherwise, able to run pretty well.

Maybe next shot I will get it in the left cheek to even things out. But I will make sure nurse mixes it well, etc.

Before addressing your question, may I offer a comment about one line you might consider removing from your signature? Most doctors won't give you a prognosis of "X years". They're guessing. We don't have the technology yet to know how long any individual has! There are broad statistics, but you aren't a statistic. Don't quit buying green bananas yet! It's easy to become fixated on a prognosis like that, and lose the joy of the years you have remaining in decent health.

To your question, my Lupron shots were only achy for a day or so, feeling like a bruise that cleared right up.

By your signature, you were already metastatic when diagnosed with a G8. Did your docs discuss whether or not you would be eligible for intermittent HT? If so, then you'd want to continue with shots because they can be interrupted. That seems a bit unlikely with your diagnosis.

If not, if you'll be permanently on HT, then it may be worth considering orchiectomy. I know it's a little tough psychologically, but so is a chemically-castrating injection on a regular basis. One simple surgery and it's done. Our doctors fight this option, and I'll cynically observe that part of that is losing a long-term revenue stream (each shot can be a few thousand dollars in the US).

Some studies have also shown reduced risk of some side effects for orchiectomy vs Lupron and the like.

If my case recurs, I expect to go back on HT early and permanently. I fully intend to take the surgical option at that point.

Am I the only one that got his HT in the arm....No SE but a little soreness for a day or 2....

Hi MarkSun, as a fellow runner and 6 month Lupron patient let me say I feel for you. The combo of the radiation and Lupron can wear you down a little especially towards the end of treatment. Regarding the leg pain it is common and my local RT questioned why I would let MD Anderson inject Lupron in the butt since I was a runner. However, I didn't have any pain. What I did have about was a meniscus tear about 41/2 months into treatment. This required 6 weeks of PT and rest. However I am on the upside of that. I would suggest that you get some PT if the leg keeps bothering you. As you know those bones and muscles and all tied together. I would have preferred to run through my treatment. At this point, I have to build back my stamina and fitness with a 40% drag (RT and Lupron) which I think should fade away in a couple of months. Best to you!

Marksun that is great your running times have increased. I am slowly building back my endurance after not running with the knee issues. The radiation effect is like a 40% drag on me, but speed work helps.
