Well, that's technically true. The first step is typically for the doctor to order the test, and generally that doctor has been the one to review and then pass along the test result with their interpretation.
It seems this pattern is changing in the reporting of the info. My local Cancer Care center used to require the doctor to release test results before the patient could see them, probably due to people reacting poorly or misunderstanding the results. That has changed during the past year or so, such that today they post the results to my patient portal website when they are done. I may see the results before the doctor does, and my MO cautioned about
that to be sure I knew it. To me it's just data, so the sooner the better!
And yes, then It's up to me what I want to do, to some extent. If I want treatment that the data don't necessarily support, I may be on my own. Insurance won't cover things unless medically indicated.
