I wish! I thought the hot flashes were starting to subside about
a month ago. But I was wrong.
I’m curious to hear from others who’ve been down this road.... how do the side effects end? Is it sudden and abrupt? Or do hot flashes become lees intense, less frequent or both, gradually, over time. Do you suddenly find that it’s easier to lose the extra belly fat? That kind of stuff. Any feedback appreciated.
I’m not wildly unhappy, and I know that I’m lucky to have only needed 6 months of HT. But it’s so frustrating, being almost 3 months past the end of treatment and still experiencing all the symptoms with a vengeance. Today I noticed for the first time, loss of muscle in my upper body. 🤮🔫
Anyway, I know, be patient. But I’m not good at that. So how do I recognize when it really starts to subside for real?

I've never been on HT and I swear I've been getting hot flashes recently.
and I've noticed that my chest is slowly sinking into my belly.
I've decided that the older I get, the less patient I need to be.
You have my permission to complain about
the whole procedure and lack of getting what you want.

I wish I took notes about
how long it took to recover from ADT. All I recall is that it took longer than I expected. I had an 18-month sentence and to the best of my recollection it was close to 6 months before the hot flashes subsided. As to my testosterone level I do have records and it was all over the place. In general, it took one year to get back to 200 and five years to get back to 300. But there was lots of zig-zagging in between.

Well, I've got some bad news for you sunshine.....as you know SE's after last as long as you were on leuprolide chemo. 6 month injection means a minimum of a year of SE's - 6 months while "on" and 6 months "recovery".
We recall that some of the SE's can be permanent - my dead testicle is still quite dead and my testosterone hasn't gone back up near normal since I started leuprolide chemo, even though it has been almost 4 years since the last chemo injection. I still get hot flashes, though my muscle - mass has increased and my fat content gone down.
Sometimes it just isn't ours to understand.....

Michael, thanks for the comments. Interesting that ou T increase was not a linear one over time. I wonder how common that is.
Trailguy...I’ve been called a lot of things around here over the years. Sunshine wasn’t one of them , until now. LOLOL. I’ll take it as a positive. Thanks for your thoughts. I’m hoping, since I only had a 6 month term, that I’ll start getting back to myself in another 3 months.
What I was looking for was, did the hot flashes (and other pronounced side effects), gradually diminish, irvdid they just stop abruptly...if anyone who is back to normal can recall.

Prato, I had my last Lupron shot in July of 2018. My T level has gone from 6 to 57 since then. I still get a hot flash every once in a while. Nothing major. The other side effects are the major ones for me. Muscle loss, weight gain, joint pain and fatigue. They seem to be still hanging on. They were not there, as severely, before lupron. It just amplified them tremendously. Now to be honest, the muscle loss, joint pain and fatigue could be due to the weight gain. I’ve had bad knees for years and arthritis in my hands, knees and spine. I feel the lupron brought them to a new higher level. Also the fact, I believe anyway, that the weight gain has pushed me over the edge from pre-diabetic to diabetic. I was on lupron for 18 months. I still have a while to go before it hopefully done with me.

My T recovered pretty quickly after 3 years of ADT2 (up into normal range under 6 months). The hot flashes and fatigue for me slowly dissipated. It seemed odd, but for probably over a year after my T got into a normal range I still had an occasional hot flash. I think Lupron has some long lasting effects, perhaps beyond simply T reduction. I don't know. My MO said he didn't think it should be happening.
I'm not sure anyone could be definitive about
this. Perhaps you might ask for your T level every time you get a PSA test, if not already. It's some extra cost, but my doctors didn't protest much when I asked. You're coming off of a serious hormonal therapy, so monitoring recovery shouldn't be a big deal!

"Guys, they put me in a coffin, looked at me for a day or two, sealed it over, now everything is dark....BUT no muscle pain, backaches, hot flashes, or fatigue. Any of you experience this, and please, only constructive comments?
Sooner, or later, all the symptoms of old age will disappear.

One other thing I recall...the general creakiness and feeling old went away in 2-3 months. It was the hot flashes that lingered much longer...

Thanks Michael, I never got that old creaky, achy joint feeling (except for an old knee issue that acted up but was calmed down with a cortisone shot early in the process.)

I second most of what trailguy wrote. And want to add that hot flashes are not uncommon in older men who have never had hormone therapy.
I believe you (Prato) are following your T; that should be instructive.

Sailor, I never knew that hot flashes are seen in men not on HT, although it makes sense as u get older t goes down naturally.
I am following my T, last tested 1 month ago, next test 6 months per RO, but I may test sooner.

3 weeks behind you in the HT RT experience and it's good to know that I am not alone with some of the SE of these treatments.
Last 3 weeks I've been mountain biking and hiking a fair bit trying to get back to where I was in the early winter but have a long way to go. Things are changing, having some success in the boudoir, gaining power on the hill climbs but still not the man I was 6 months ago.
Just arrived in southern Utah after a 3 day drive for the annual hike and bike holiday. We will see how the power and endurance are when the rubber hits the road
My experience is that the more physically active you are, the faster your metabilism is which allows your body to get back to it's natural equilibrium quicker.
I don't allow a little thing like cancer to get in the way of fun .
Hopefully, your road to normal will be short.

Prato
I had my last 3 month Eligard shot in June 2016. My T went all the way up to 39 and is now back to 15.3. I am still having hot flashes, and CRS and muscle weakness. MO is not too worried about
it. Doesn't want to start replacement therapy as long as I can handle to effects.
So one never knows what might happen. PSA is undetectable, And that was the goal.
Good Luck

Thanks guys. So looks like recovery is all over the place, and somewhat related to how long one was on the HT, as others have said.
My hot flashes are still coming hard, even though a few weeks back i thought they were subsiding. And as far as "success in the budoir", slapshot, glad for you, I am still looking like a wet rope. Nothing. Although some of it may have to do with my being on 50 mg Zoloft, which i began slowly tapering this week, so we'll see.
Appreciate the responses and sharing of others experiences.

Some success in the boudoir is still a far cry from pre HT times

I think there's going to be a huge difference between the guys who did 2-3 years vs 6-9 months. I did 9 months and honestly all I can remember is my testosterone came roaring back and then SEs disappeared. my guess is sometimes after six months but before nine months.
also, I always went to the gym even when I was so weak I had to fake it. I also pushed the aerobics hard at the end of ADT and after and went on a pretty strict diet and in about
four months dropped all the weight I gained and then some (about
30 or so pounds).

F8, thanks for that last paragraph. I’m doing those things. But I’m not consistent enough. Needed to read that. Especially in the context of your good result. Can’t get lazy
