Logo - I like Chet Atkins, my favorite was PBS Soundstage simulcast of Chet Atkins, George Benson and Earl Klugh from the late '70's that I had on cassette for years after watching it on TV. Then the cassette committed suicide and did not find it again for years online.

spottydog - Interesting band, She Drew the Gun, not my style so much but decent.

I am listening to some of the recommendations and find a few that I like. Not a huge fan of folk and ballad singers as I like those better in person than recorded for some reason. I appreciate musicians the most and their talent as it amazes me how good so many are. Heck, I used to listen to Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa drum battle albums and never could play drums worth a lick. They just do stuff that amazes me like the great guitar, bass, keyboard, and horn players do.

Benson is great saw him many times back in my youth along with BB King as my first concert at age 17. I see Earl Klugh mentioned. While he is a decent musician, my offering here is more interesting as a phenomenon. Mike Geier is the lead singer for an Atlanta-based band called "KingSize", apparently because they are big guys. (Mike is 6'8" tall) But he is better known as Puddles the clown and his one-man act as "Puddles Pity Party". He went a few rounds on America's Got Talent but he is mostly an Internet phenomenon. He has a lovely baritone voice which he uses to cover other people's songs. What I find interesting about him is that through his persona as a depressed, grimacing, and fidgeting clown he tricks young people into listening to songs with some sort of emotional content. His reactions to the music are alternately over-the-top and just-plain-weird and that's where much of his humor comes from, but to "get the joke" so to speak you have to compare his odd body language to the sort of reaction the song ought to evoke. You have to listen.

PDA - I remember Mike Geier from AGT, he was a pretty good singer with the unique clown presentation but did not make it too far as I recall.

Pontiac - Had trouble finding SCI at Fillmore, seems to only be on old DVD for $’s. Am I looking in the wrong places for CD or MP3? I have Carnival ‘99 which has some good tunes on it, Take Five, Byrdland...

Bohemond - Have not listened to Sam Bush, he plays with David Grisham I see. Will have to check out further. Is there a best album in your opinion? I tend to like live performance recordings.

JNF - Somehow I have 7 Joe Bonamassa albums, not sure where they all came from. I like him but I didn’t know it was that much. That song is on one of the live albums, good tune by him, little different than his usual blues.

Hey guys, I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but if I will stand up and take the spanking from the mods if I'm being a bad person. I gave a couple of links to Sam Bush above. After that I Googled and found there was a documentary about him released last year that can be streamed on Amazon, but you have to pay to stream it. I don't make any money on this so I don't think this is any different than if I recommended a book or a restaurant.

But here's the deal. Whatever kind of music you are into, and even if you aren't into music much at all, this is a few bucks very well spent because it is about music, excellence, vision even at the expense of traditional expectations of what you are supposed to do, and yes, cancer and carrying on in spite of cancer.

If you feel like risking five bucks I highly recommend streaming "Revival: The Sam Bush Story" on Amazon or anywhere else you can find it.

For me music pretty much died on or about 1990. It's been nothing but noize ever since. I feel sorry for the young folk. They got nothing to hold onto of their own. I can't stomach watching the Grammy Awards anymore unless they induct some old timer into the Hall of Fame. Artistically the nation has really deteriorated in both film and music over the last 30 years. I like to go back in time and listen to the real talent. Heck, I'll go back to the days of Sinatra and Dean Martin that I remember as a kid. Classics. Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Chuck Berry. Lately I've been watching video replays of Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night. You'll rarely see so much talent on stage at one time. Roy, Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, k.d. Lang, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther. All playing is a smoke filled club in L.A. when people were allowed to smoke and drink in public at the same time. And nobody complained either. Roy was a genius of a songwriter (sang from the heart) and had an operatic voice matched by no one. Most of my favorite artists are dead now. Talent just doesn't rise to the top anymore. Stardom is bought and sold in the corporate boardrooms these days. Oh well. I lived in America during the best times a man could ask for. Dumb luck, I guess.

Bohemond - Thanks for the info, I love music videos and documentaries and watch in my home theater setup in the basement. Not sure how I missed Sam Bush but I like that type of music and definitely the story. You may like a local Duluth band called Trampled by Turtles if you have not heard them.

Shop - I kind of wonder what your poem is like after listening to that version of SoS. Does it start slow and crush the reader at the end?

TJ - I hear you. I can't put my finger on the exact date but it seemed to start with Punk, then Rap, then the mess of today's music. I think it may have been the 1980's but clearly by 1990, good new music was hard to come by IMHO. The music business is largely responsible as it goes for the sure thing with clones of the previous artist and invests zip in new artists anymore. My brother is a musician and complains about it all the time.

I've heard Puddles do a number of Elvis tunes. I'll check out your link when I get home. I try to limit music videos at work to emergencies. He also does a standout Johnny Cash. I posted a link on another thread to his rendition of The Who's Pinball Wizard sung to the tune of Folsom Prison Blues. It's worth Googling for.

While I can't completely agree that both film and music ended thirty years ago I find it hard to argue that their intersection -- film music -- has been in sharp decline. If you ask almost anybody to name five films where they remember the music, can hum a few bars, and actually like it, the films on the list will almost always be at least twenty years old. Even kids will mention old movies. (Musician biopics don't count although, come to think of it, all the music in Bohemian Rhapsody or Rocket Man is at least that old.)
