Job postings on the American Cancer Society website: working for the ACS

Of course there are many different people who do many different kinds of jobs in the work against cancer.

There are those who do medically related and research related jobs, of course, but there are also jobs involving office work, public relations, advocacy, etc.

In fact many of those jobs involve the very same kinds of work that goes on in virtually any standard business office we might think of.

I recently came across the American Cancer Society's jobs available page (linked below), which advertises positions currently available with the ACS, and which is searchable by type of job an applicant may desire.

I thought it was instructive to look through the listings to see just what kinds of jobs were available right now with the ACS, not only out of curiosity, but also to get an idea of just how many different ways it's possible to work against cancer, in this case with the country's most noted cancer organization.

That's the reason for this thread, to bring attention to the many different ways it's possible to do cancer-related work.

Using the search engine on their page is pretty simple. Just go to the "Search our Jobs" line. All you have to do is just click on the magnifying glass to the right, without even entering anything in the previous boxes (unless you want to), and that retrieves everything currently available. Or, you can go to the "Category" filter on right side of screen and select among the narrower job groupings which are listed there.

Do what I did, just have some fun searching various kinds of jobs in the ACS search engine, and see what kinds of positions the ACS is offering right now. The position descriptions are rather full and detailed, telling pretty specifically what the job entails, and the positions seem to be in places all over the U.S.

I was somewhat surprised that the positions listed don't have salary ranges as part of their ads, but evidently the ACS likes to negotiate with applicants from scratch, I guess.

And if it just so happens that you are looking for a job in cancer-related work right now, well, maybe that doesn't apply to most of us, or, maybe somewhat more possible, you may have a friend or relative who might be, let them know the ACS is looking for some good people to hire.

There are surely other cancer-related agencies that have their own "want ads" out there, but the ACS is probably the most prestigious of them.

At the least, this thread and the link below remind us that the work against cancer really is, although we may not always think about it as such, a business, and one that employs standard business practices, such as advertising for future employees.

Did you know that ACS has a policy NOT to hire employees that use tobacco products? Good for them...

That I don't know.

I would guess that they largely rely on the personal integrity of employees rather than "policing"...after all, we are talking about adults, here, for at least most of these jobs. They want employees who make good decisions...

It is very easy to test for tobacco use, just a type of swab that will pick up cotines from days before. At my place there was a dramatic difference in insurance payments. They did random "show up at noon" and lock the place down until everyone got tested.

My following comment re tobacco use is getting OT, but that's okay.

Because mentioning anything that puts a thumbs down on tobacco use is a good thing.

Something that may well have gone a long way in helping to do that is something I noticed while watching a MLB ball game on TV last night.

The camera had zoomed in on the batter in the on deck circle who, as he was casually swinging his bat, was at the same time blowing one of the biggest pink bubble gum bubbles out of his mouth that I have seen in a good while.

Which is significant, because not all that long ago it was usual for baseball players to chew and spit chewing tobacco constantly, setting themselves up for the oral health issues that likely and unfortunately followed for many of them.

I don't know if young people these days are all that influenced by professional athletes as much as we probably were when we were young, but substituting bubble gum for chewing tobacco was a great move in MLB, if kids were indeed following the players as role models.

On the basis of a previously published panel of 23 gene transcripts that differentiated patients with metastatic progression, researchers made a prediction model using independent training and testing datasets in order to create additional tools for accurate prognostication of tumor aggressiveness in prostate cancer (PCa). Thirteen out of 23 previously recognized gene transcripts that stratified individuals with aggressive PCa were verified in the training dataset. In comparison with those without recurrence in the testing dataset, these biomarkers and Gleason score (GS) were used to create a four-gene (CST2, FBLN1, TNFRSF19, and ZNF704) transcript (4GT) score that was significantly greater in individuals who grew to metastatic-lethal events. The 4GT score gave higher prognostication exactitude vs GS alone, and it enhanced risk stratification in subgroups defined by a combination of clinicopathological characteristics (ie, Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment-Surgery). Therefore, in men treated for localized PCa, this verified 4GT score had prognostic value for metastatic-lethal progression and assured an additional assessment for its clinical use.
