I think that you know you have beaten the beast when you die of something else. The article is misleading when it says "The 74-year-old singer was given the all-clear in July after his cancer was diagnosed in its early stages in February 2016." Saying that he received an "all-clear" makes it sound as though the disease was cured once and for all time and that he has no further need for follow-ups. No one can know that! It may be lurking in the background, waiting to emerge in ten years.

In remission is NOT cured, guys! Rod, if he has half a brain, should be getting PSA checks for many years, just in case he's not "all-clear" forever.

Regardless, having a public voice and face to put on PCa is a good thing, no? Whether you like him or not....we need his voice. And, if he is receiving competent care, he will keep an eye on things going forward.

And, he's 74, with a low-grade diagnosis 3 years ago. In all likelyhood, he WILL die of something else. Not knowing the details, his odds of dying of PC in the next 10 years are pretty low. For an old rocker, who to use a phrase I've heard before has been rode hard and put away wet a few times, living past 84 is not highly likely.

I agree, Halbert, that the celebrity public face is a good thing. I like Stephen Fry better. They were probably trying to convey the message that if you are diagnosed early and treated, it will turn out well, which is surely a good message.

Local newscaster here that went to some of the same doctors as me and proclaimed on the air that the doctors told him he was cured after ADT and IGRT. I appreciate the positive mental attitude but there are not many significant cancers where you are proclaimed cured without going for a long time without recurrence. Hope he does well as he beat leukemia earlier in life but makes me wonder.

It seems to me that some people like to say, “I beat cancer” as a motivator to move mentally beyond as much as stop others from asking about our problems. I get that. Personally I believe that PCA is one cancer that fools so many due to the slow growth and lack of symptoms.

Another celebrity who claimed that he “beat” the disease after 3 years of treatments was Dan Fogelberg. Dan died within 18 months of his proclamation. I’m no expert on this subject but I do find the best answer for my current condition is simply, “my cancer is under control.” This eliminates further questions and avoids the “jinx” that I seem to fear regardless of the science.

Keep the faith gents and stay realistic. This forum is a great way to deal with the issues we never considered beforehand.

I agree with Halbert, the public nature of the disease is a good thing. We have many ways to describe our progress, Remission, under control, undetectable. etc. I just say I have been treated and hoping for the best. Denis

If most people are like me (god forbid), when I hear that someone had just about any cancer, and they’ve been “cured”, it goes without saying that, “cured” doesn’t mean the same thing as being cured of the measles.

Throat, brain, lung, breast, prostate, etc. etc. it’s obviously great news that the treatment has ridded the body of all signs of the disease. But I also think *most* people are probably familiar enough with cancer to know that it can come back.

Hat’s off to Rod. You done great man. I can certainly understand not wanting to educate the entire world on everything “Prostate Cancer”. Thanks for your music man. It’s been with me all my life.

The more publicity the disease gets the more men will be detected early, so got on Rod for goofing public.
As for him saying he’s cured, sometimes I think sometimes one is better off being UNrealistic 🤔

One of Rod's friends saw this girl singing on the sidewalk in London. When Rod heard her, he took her on stage with him at Albert Hall to sing this song.

Can you imagine? The thrill of that for her? (you can see it in her) He gave her the biggest stage. He gave her the opportunity to experience....singing in that venue.....in duet with one of the biggest names in Rock'n Roll.

One can see her nervousness. Her appreciation to both Rod and the audience is palpable. You can see Rod listening to her sing. So beautiful....this song, her voice, that experience and chance he gave her.

Hopefully he is cured. It is very common for low grade to be cured with either radiation or surgery. I do not like the early cure pronouncements as the is just no way anyone can know with certainty.

Regarding the performance it is stunning. Helluva a sax solo as well. Talk about belting it out. Thanks IT. I have always liked Sir Rod. One of the best balladeers ever and what a stage presence.

Two years after I had brachytherapy for low volume Gleason 3 + 3 prostate cancer, my RO told me "You are cured". I objected by saying "You mean I am in remission". Guess what, in 2016 my cancer came back as Extra Capsular Extension. This time I got treated with ADT and cyberknife. Then, in 2018 when my PSA started rising rapidly with PSADT less than 6 weeks (from undetectable in January to 4.18 in November), PETCT scan found metastasis in multiple pelvic and abdominal lymph nodes. Now I am on Lupron and Casodex.

So, with prostate cancer, no one should say cured.

Good luck to Rod and I hope he is cured and never has to face PCa again. With that said, I sure hope he continues testing for PCa.

Ten plus years out and I’ve never thought of my PCa as being cured .... still get an annual check up and PSA from the urologist. Of course I am very conservative .... one of those guys who just had to have it out.

Same with my skin cancers, blood clots and heart problems ...... annual checkups. Can’t ever be too careful.
