Stereotactic radiation (with photons) is often used to 'kill' metastatic brain tumors. But also ask about
proton therapy. The latter kind of radiation is especially suitable for tumors that are located near the surface. Protons don't travel far and thus minimize side effects on adjacent tissues.
Also, let me mention that I have a much younger cousin who had stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Her brain tumors were treated with radiation and she also had immunotherapy with Yervoy (ipilimumab). She is now a survivor. I believe that Yervoy has been tried as a prostate cancer therapy, but without much success. However, Yervoy is being evaluated in trials together with other agents.
