I'm not a psychiatrist, but my own personal opinion is it is how some people deal with their fear. Emotionally, they can't handle the truth so they deny it is happening. I find it sad, and believe those sorts of people are a danger to themselves, and to others.

I heard Dr. Anthony Fauci on NPR this morning saying there are now 1.1 million test kits available and by next week there will be about 4 million. We are weeks behind where we should be on this.

Meanwhile I'm about to mix up a batch of home-brew hand sanitizer because there is none to be had. Here's a recipe for anyone who needs it. The alcohol has to be at least 60 percent pure, so you can't use off-the shelf vodka. This recipe calls for isopropyl alcohol which is usually 70 percent, but be sure to check the label. I have 190 proof grain alcohol (95 percent pure) in my shop for mixing shellac. I'll use that but will dilute it down to 75 percent first.

Cuomo is deploying the National Guard. I would expect to see much more of this. I'm not happy to see Martial Law types of situations, but if that's what it takes to tamp down the virus I might be on board with it.

I might add that if I were a younger man, in perfect health, I might be more critical of "mandated " intervention. But there are millions of us who need medications and health care. Some fairly serious inconveniences, if it gets to that point, seem worthwhile.

Bravo for Cuomo.

To all those who've ridiculed people showing concern, calling them Chicken Littles, and trolling them with childish insults, do you think the government calls out the National Guard for the flu? Do you think the government closes off entire countries because most get a "mild" case? Wake up - for your own good, and for the good of the rest of us, who find your cavalier attitude dangerous to our health.

Cuomo makes Jay Inslee and Gavin Newsom look like they way behind the curve. What will their responses be? Of course throughout the ages governors have called out the national guard for all sorts of reasons and with varying results. I am hopeful that this move will prove to be effective.

And, yes the national Guard has been called out for the flu, Buddy. In my home state of Indiana we had a serious Swine flu epidemic just after I got out of college. The governor called out the national guard and they administered mandatory vaccines. It was the only time I had a shot from the pneumatic gun that was used in the mass vaccines for our Vietnam Nam era service members. Absolutely painless and only left a little mark. We all had to go to the National Guard Armory and get the shot. I remember we waited in line for more than half the day. This went on for several weeks.

There is an excellent report to congress a few years ago entitled The Role of the Department of Defensr During A Flu Pandemic that outlines the role and actions including the use of the national Guard. You can find it at www.fas.org.

Also there is a report in the Military Times on February 7, 2020 about the formal preparations the Department of Defense is making for the Covid-19 epidemic.

I just read a report from South Korea posted by Agency France-Presse that four days in a row the number of new cases have fallen. On Tuesday 131 new cases were reported. This is certainly a good trend. Remember that Southern Korea has by far the most vigorous testing program and report they are testing 10,000 per day. Also their rate of death is comparable to the seasonal flu epidemic. All good news.

Where I work (in NJ), our youngest employee who is a 1st semester senior at Rutgers just got an email informing her that after tomorrow, the campus is closing. Similar decisions have been made at Columbia, Princeton, Harvard, and I'm sure many others. So, yeah, this is big. Really, really, big.

except for the wackos buying up all the toilet paper.
and I went out for breakfast this morning to a restaurant where the staff was busy disinfecting all surfaces and asking everyone entering to push use the hand sanitizer.

The recipe doesn't 'call ' for any particular strength of alcohol but it doesn't work with 70% alcohol. Lets do some math:
The recipe calls for two parts alcohol per one part aloe gel. If we use 70% (ordinary rubbing) alcohol then 2 parts of 70% rubbing alcohol gives us 2 x .7 = 1.4 parts isopropyl alcohol. When you dilute that to 3 parts with aloe gel you have 1.4 parts alcohol per 3 parts hand sanitizer mix. That's 46.7 percent. aka not enough.
Doing the same math with 90% isopropanol we get 2 x .9 = 1.8 parts alcohol and 1.8 parts alcohol in 3 parts hand sanitizer is 60 percent.
You can make do with 70 percent but you need to use a 6:1 ratio of alcohol to aloe and your sanitizer will be slightly less effective because it will be runny and will dry faster. Best to use 90% isopropyl alcohol if you can find it.

I watched Gov. Cuomo’s news conference today. Two main takeaways. First, he has the prisons producing high alcohol hand sanitizer. Second, the National Guard will deliver meals and clean public places in a one mile area in New Rochelle, Westchester County. He has ordered all large gatherings to be canceled through the end of March. He did not say how many National Guard would be deployed or whether they will have any police powers to control movement or gatherings. The area is not really shut down as there will be no restriction on going to work, shopping, restricting people from entering the area, etc.

Not especially relevant to hand sanitizer. But for the record, I use Everclear or other pure grain alcohol from the liquor store for making shellac. Shellac made with the denatured stuff from the hardware store makes crappy French polish. Also pure alcohol doesn't smell as nasty as the hardware store stuff. Until a couple of years ago I had to go out of state to buy Everclear, but now it's legal in liquor stores here in Massachusetts.

Is it a good idea to possibly have denatured alcohol absorb into your skin? I believe it contains a small amount of methanol.

I think soap probably works well enough.

For cleaning, hand washing with soap and water works best. If you're not able to do that hand sanitizer works second best.

You're not reading the numbers correctly, JNF. 0.1% mortality rate for the seasonal flu versus 1.1% isn't close. The ordinary flu rate is 10 times less. Plus in other countries the covid mortality rate is much higher again.

Worldmeters.info reports CV cases. The latest from China on 3-8-2020.

Total cases. 80,761
Total recoveries. 60,121
Total deaths. 3,136

New cases on 3-8-2020. 19
New recoveries 3-8-2020. 1,297

Clearly looks like they have significantly turned the corner and shows the disease has about a three month cycle there. That Premier Xi visited Hubei province and the city of Wuhan shows that it is done in China. Given that cycle, in the USA we could be over this in another 30 days with far less people affected. South Korea has also made a similar turn and, thus, I would expect the results in Italy to be significantly different in the next week. At this rate, it appears to be nothing like the annual flu that we take for granted each year. Hopefully it has minimal health effect on people, but the economic effect may be significant.

JNF enough. COVID-19 is not comparable to seasonal flu. Do you see the National Guard out for seasonal flu? If you do maybe you've had too much to drink, and/or some LSD - or both!
