China has had the most successful effort against COVID-19 of any nation on the planet, and bought all of us time. They should be praised. My own view is that China has been demonized out of fear, but we're drifting into the political and that's forbidden here.

Anthony Fauci, head of infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health, told a congressional hearing on Wednesday that he would recommend the National Basketball Association play their games without a crowd because of the fast-moving coronavirus outbreak.

"We would recommend that there not be large crowds, if that means not having any people in the audience when the NBA plays, so be it," Fauci said. "But as a public health official, anything that has large crowds is something that would give a risk to spread."

There we have it sports lovers. You don't get much better than Dr. Anthony Fauci. It is shocking to me the NCAA hasn't canceled. The U.S. is being far too complacent about all of this.

Sure, Dr. Anthony Fauci said today Covid-19 is at least 10x more lethal than seasonal flu. As a comparison, H1N1 (Swine Flu) was less lethal than regular seasonal flu, per Fauci.

The rest of your question is one of stats that are near impossible to bring together. Health care professionals have been infected, become critically ill, and died. What sort of PPE each wore is unknown to me.

My point was, there have been severe cases, and even death, of protected health care workers treating covid-19 cases. I don't recall, ever, a healthy health care worker dying from treating the seasonal flu.

Along the lines of your comment--and how differently the responses are being in China vs Italy or the US--and this is in many ways a political comment: Nations that have a command form of government will almost always do better on this sort of thing than a republic will. Why? Because in a republic, the decision-makers are by necessity reactive to what they think the 'people' will let them do. It may even be a flaw that appears in times of crisis--but--what's the alternative?

I'm just catching up with today's posts on this thread and agree it is, generally, a valuable thread. HOWEVER, I will echo Prato's commentary in that the discussion needs to be kept respectful and with Rule #3 in mind. We can all have differences of opinion re the severity, the source, the duration and a variety of other issues. But, remember that everyone here is entitled to their opinions. If you disagree with another poster, please do it respectfully and without rancor.

Moderators I don't think you need to intervene on this thread these comments are what the people are not only thinking here but these are the same things that you hear all day at the auto dealership I work at part time. People feel that they have to voice their opinions about this MAYBE it's a way to relieve some of the anxiety that people are feeling right now but don't want to admit? Even if this just kind of goes away the wage class workers are going to get hit hard! Already at the dealership business has been terrible the last two weeks when usually this time of year things are going pretty strong. JMHO

My Dad and I (engineers) used to sit on the front porch when the black sky and tornado warnings went off while my Mom and sister (language and social work majors) went to the basement with candles and radio. My little brother (musician) would run back and forth checking in with both groups, not knowing which group had the right idea on this end of world scenario.

I think he eventually sided with my Dad and I as later in life, he was driving home on a side road in a windy tornado laden storm and had a large tree fall on his car which destroyed the car but he somehow survived with minimal injuries. Not sure where he stands today, I will have to ask him about that next time I see him.

It is all a matter of perspective with some math thrown in to confuse the non-believers.
