Prostate Oncologist in San Diego

I am looking for a Prostate Oncologist in San Diego. I have advanced PC and need local care. Although I can travel to LA or further for one-off testing or treatment, I need an oncologist within the local San Diego area. Suggestions?

While I don't know know anyone in San Diego, if the goal is to develop a treatment plan you might want to consider Prostate Oncology Specialists in the LA area. (Specifically Marina del Rey.) They may also be able to partner with someone local in San Diego for your treatment. Welcome to Healingwell and good luck to you!

Johnson, welcome to Healingwell, hope you’ll stick around there are lots of knowledgeable and supportive guys here willing to help, if you ever need it.
In the meantime, there is a blog I follow written by a guy named Dan who has PCa and lives in San Diego. If you go to his website/blog you can contact him, and I’m sure he would be willing to help, I’ve spoken with him(virtually) he’s a good guy. You can find him here...

Also, as far as Prostate oncology in LA, mentioned above, FWIW, I’ve done a phone consult with them, I live in NY, you might consider contacting them to see if you could work with them with only an occasional visit to LA, but mostly via phone. They are high quality,

Johnson, I don't have any additional thoughts for you....but with all things PC, a good place to start is with the phone. Calling known experts in other cities can be very helpful: all the experts know each other, and can help you find the local people you need.

I live on the east coast, so I have no idea who to call on the other coast. I would like to extend my hand in welcome, and, when you get a chance, if you'd share your story to this point, we'd all find it informative and helpful. It's also a good idea to fill out a signature (you do that on your forum profile page) with the high points of your medical situation...when diagnosed, initial PSA, biopsy results, what treatments you had so far, etc.

Beyond that, welcome.

Hello Johnson and welcome. In the back of his book, "Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers", Dr. Scholz provides a list of prostate oncologists. Two are in the San Diego area. Dr. Micheal Kosty was listed at the Scripps Clinic, Green Cancer Center, La Jolla. Dr. Charles Redfern was listed at Oncology Associates of San Diego. The book is of course now several years old but perhaps this is a place to start.

Since the book is several years old, I would also call Scholz’s office and inquire. May be an updated list. Find out who he collaborates with.

Understood. You should go to Dans website with the link i provided and use the "Contact me" page to contact Dan. He not only lives in San Diego, but i believe he works in a hospital. I'm sure he can give you some names.

I have seen 4 urological oncologists here in San Diego.
Dr. Carol Salem did my robotic prostatectomy, my insurance stopped their agreement with her practice so I moved on.
I have seen Dr. Kosty referenced above (medical oncologist), I am seeing him a second time along with my regular surgical oncologist, Dr. Ramdev Konijeti. I have also seen Dr. Tripuraneni, who is a urological radiation oncologist (top-notch) who did my salvage radiation. All are good docs, all with Scripps Clinic in San Diego, La Jolla.

Interestingly, for the first time in my adventure (2008), I am using the insurance service where they give you an "advocate" - nurse practitioner to pull several docs together - to share a common opinion on how I should proceed. I am getting a spinal fusion, which I am told I should do before I go on lupron. There is an apparent difference of opinion on whether my last axumin scan was positive or not, and what to do about it if so. Seems like a good thing.
