Relocated to Knoxville area and looking for Uro

Hello everyone,

I have relocated from the Rock Hill SC area to Knoxville TN area and need to find a new Urologist. I was diagnosed in 2017 with one of 12 cores positive G6 I have had regular PSA checks since then with a 2nd biopsy in 2019 which found no cancer at all so I know I am very fortunate. That being said I need to find a new Urologist and AS program here in the Knoxville area to make staying on top of this easier. If anyone has a recommendation I would greatly appreciate the information.

You’re in a big college town so UT might be a good place to start looking or doctors affiliated with the university.

I figured UT might have something to look at but I honestly have not heard them talked about much on this site. In fact, I have heard people recommend people drive to Nashville to see doctors at Vanderbilt and I was hoping to avoid that unless treatment becomes necessary.

Dr. Newport sounds like the place for me to check out. I will call to see if he is accepting new patients.

My local URO sent me for a second opinion to Joseph Smith at Vandy. And, I ended up having him do my RP. He is a well known authority who is widely published. OTOH, he may be retiring soon(or not). Scroll down in this link and click on "view all publications" to see a list of his 335 articles, if interested.

According to Dr. Walsh, a prostatectomy is one of the most challenging cancer operations in medicine.

To BillyBob's post....I would advise anyone who ever needs treatment for prostate cancer, whether it be radiation or surgery, to get out of E. TN for their care. This is not a knock on any individual institution. It's just an acknowledgement of the fact that there's different levels of care in different parts of the country.

Southern Appalachia is beautiful. Low cost of living. Low crime. Friendly people but healthcare can be a weak link.

Dr. Smith at Vanderbilt is my Uro as I go thru their AS. Retirement was a bit of a worry to me as well. I don't know his age but he is up there. I hope that if I get to a point of needing to move out of AS that he will still be there to help me thru it.

He made my wife very comfortable during my first consultation with him after I had my first biopsy at another facility. He took time, answered all of her questions in a way that she could understand. She was ready to take quick action after the diagnosis and the way the first URO discussed it. Dr. Smith said I was borderline on AS or treatment, but thought AS could be the way to go until/if something changes.
