Djin, I suppose someday I will need to take a run at Ulysses....I suspect it is best read with a tall glass of Guinness at hand.
Perhaps a few of those, along with a copy or outline of
The Odyssey, which it mirrors, chapter by chapter.
On a separate but related topic, I've been quite pleased with The Great Courses Plus, which lets your stream unlimited courses. I've watched perhaps 8 or 9 courses so far. They've lowered their prices and the current best deal is a $30 quarterly renewable subscript
ion, so $10/month. The difference between the Plus and The Great Courses is that you purchase and own the latter on DVD, whereas you have access to view any of the Plus courses only as long as you are subscribed. But it is so much cheaper, which means you can watch only a couple of lectures of interest in a course and then leave it without feeling you've wasted money. You can watch on your PC or device, but I prefer Roku on TV. Most courses seem to be around 30 half-hour lectures, which IMO is a good content length and pacing. You can subscribe by month, quarter, or year and cancel with a click. Your access ends at the end if your current subsciption period. They have a free trial period, too.
I have no other connection with this business. There are also a number of other (free) courses offered by other institutions online too. But those I've sampled are often classroom-filmed with lots of "um's" and hesitations and wasted intervals. TGC, on the other hand, are well-crafted, script
ed lectures. The visuals I've seen are just OK but nothing special. Some of the older courses are not HiRes, but the content is what counts more, I believe. They appear to be constantly adding courses, some with a shorter number if lectures, too.
