Interesting MO visit today: mRNA PCa Vaccine

I had an interesting visit with my MO today. He's at the U of Arizona Cancer Center and he will be involved in Phase I and Phase II trials for Pfizer's mRNA PCa Vaccine. Hopefully I'm remembering this stuff correctly. He said the study will be for "more recently diagnosed men with non-emergent PCa and for men with a recurrence of mets," which I assume means crmPCa. Again, I may not the details completely right.

I think my main point is that these mRNA vaccines seem to have a bright future in many areas of medicine. It's nice to see possible developments that aren't simply another variation on ADT treatments.

I asked a lot questions about the vaccine, which must have given him the wrong impression. He finally said that I didn't qualify for either arm of the study, but not to worry because it will be many years before I might need such a vaccine. He always gives me the impression that he believes my current treatment will work for a long time. I hope he's right. In any case, I always leave our appointments feeling better about things.

You never know, breakthroughs could be just around the corner.

It looks like this is the study: PRO-MERIT ((Prostate Cancer Messenger RNA Immunotherapy)

Among the eligibility criteria is:

"Patients must have histologically confirmed mCRPC and have progressed after at least 2 but no more than 3 lines of life-prolonging systemic therapy (e.g., abiraterone or enzalutamide, docetaxel, cabazitaxel) or cannot tolerate any of these therapies. These lines of therapy include life-prolonging therapies administered in the metastatic hormone-sensitive setting."

Our comrade Stephen S. just said it all, in his words above ...

Thankful to scientists and researchers who are tackling the toughest research now ... trying to push the limits of existing research, to improve survival rates ... and to create new options, where options don't currently exist.

Wouldn't it be a GRAND problem if we had to build a larger armory at the castle, in order to create more room for new WEAPONS in the battle?!!

Grateful for every step forward in research ~~~ and updates like this are uplifting and instill hope!

mRNA vaccines are a game-changer in medicine. At the risk of flummoxing the skeptics, they are miraculous and the start of a hopeful future in cancer treatment

The company running the PRO-MERIT trial is BioNTech.
Yes, the one that developed one of the (m-RNA based) Covid-19 vaccines.
The PRO-MERIT trial is phase 1.

In addition, the company is developing vaccines against a variety of other cancers.

I recall a conversation I was having with my eventual RO 2 years ago who said that a vaccine for PCa wouldn't surprise him.

I was reading an article, in recent months, that described a future era in oncology healthcare --- not yet here today ---- that would not depend on arduous treatments like radiation and chemotherapy for oncology patients.

The article stated that scientists are constantly seeking treatments for the future --- that would not be so caustic to a patient's system as radiation and chemotherapy infusions can be ---- in terms of lingering side effects.

When I reflect on the advancements in healthcare in the past century, it's tantalizing to think what another century will bring to the forefront ----in terms of improved healthcare and new scientific and medical discoveries ...

What medical breakthroughs are "just around the corner" ---- and what discoveries await "farther down the road" beyond that?

I recall anatomy class from when I was in nursing school and I'm blown away.
We are unlocking secrets of our basic life functions. The possibility of cures is endless and this not only offers hope but fills me with gratitude to the scientists who have made these strides.
We are bearing the fruit already but imagine the future.

Back when I was a college student (late 70's), there was ONE course in genetics offered, and it was basic Mendelian genetics: Punnet Squares, Dominant vs Recessive genes, Chromosome pictures, and growing red, white, and pink sweet peas in the greenhouse.

Biochemistry was learning the Krebs cycle and extracting cholesterol from gallstones, and reading "The Double Helix" by Watson and Crick.

Now? A whole new world.

Reading The Double Helix (by Watson) must have been the most enjoyable part of that course.
