I got a letter in the mail today that is making me think about
this question: Do I still need a Urologist?
Here's the background:
When I moved to the Philadelphia area 5 years ago, I was 18 months post RALP. I got a referral to a Urology practice, and met a really good doctor, who I really like. He's been monitoring my PSA and seeing me, now once a year that I'm over 6 years out from surgery.
The letter came today that he is retiring as of the end of the year, and I will be paired with another doctor in the practice, unless I choose not to. I have mixed feelngs about
it. On the one hand, I really like the current guy, he was always really thorough with me--having me have a broad spectrum of annual blood work--so it worked out that I had full blood work every 6 months--from my GP in the fall and the Urologist in the spring. He was more than willing to suggest I check out other concerns.
On the other hand, I'm 6.5 years out from RALP, and I've been undetectable PSA all along. I don't have any other urologic issues, and my GP could take care of my Cialis scrip. So, there is a mixed thought going on. What are your thoughts about
this?

Hey Halbert -
I stopped seeing my urologist when I was overseas for an extended period. Haven't returned. Been fine. My PCP continues to do annual rectal. I check PSA annually now.
I am in email contact - recently got a reference from him for a thyroid surgeon. Good way to find the right talent.

I cancelled my last urologist appointment (and Lupron shot) and switched to having my MO office inject me with Eligard. If I have issues down there I'll make an appointment.

Hal, i don't have a urologist. The closest i've had to one since i have been diagnosed is my surgeon. Right now i am followed by my Radiation Oncologist, and the only reason i dont just test thru my PCP, is that its very soon after SRT + ADT and i want to keep a "finger in the system" in case anything pops up unexpectedly.
If i were in your shoes, i would just let my PCP do your test.

After my 3rd year post RALP with undetectable PSA my urologist passed me back to my PCP. My PCP retired and told me he couldn’t give me a referral so right now I am without any doctor. I’m supposed to get my next PSA in May and that’s when my Rx for lisinopril expires so I have to figure something out before then.
I am not sure how I am going to make a choice. I’ve talked to friends and it’s like asking what’s the best tire or oil on an automotive forum: everyone likes the one they use, doesn’t like the rest, and all you get is a complete list of what’s available.
My only criteria is that I want someone younger who will be around before my retirement plan ends and I refuse to see ANY physician assistant. I’ve had three poor experiences with that lot and would rather see my local veterinarian than one of them again.

After he plied his trade, I got away from my uro as fast as I could. He didn't like spending time with patients, and I didn't care for his company.

I still see my URO twice a year. I have been on this same schedule since before my PCa diagnosis/treatment, due to my having BPH. The URO also manages my TRT. I don't mind seeing him every 6 months, as he and I can focus on the specific issues he is treating and managing for me. I doubt that my PCP would have enough time during our standard office visits to cover these issues along with the others the PCP manages for me.
