My AUS required replacement two weeks after the initial implant surgery. The cuff was too small and I was unable to urinate. The day of the original surgery was a nightmare and I ended up with a Foley cath until the AUS was replaced. Apparently I am just in between sizes as the new one is a bit loose and I have required a pad everyday since then. It has become worse over the years and I now typically use two a day. Fortunately I only drip slightly when sleeping and just keep a dry washcloth tucked between my legs.
The revision surgery went okay. Of course, the incision in my perineum had not fully healed yet so the procedure itself was less traumatic physically. Now five years later I have discussed replacement with my Uro and with a specialist. The surgeon scoped me last month and said there is no urethral erosion and he could not guarantee that another replacement would be any better than what is currently in place. Plus he added that there's always the possibility of things being worse. I replied I wasn't looking forward to going thru that surgery again, so agreed to come back in a year or two.
My Urologist said to enjoy my life (not having active cancer) and not change anything. In your case, I'm guessing you're now in your mid seventies. Your recover from the surgery will likely not be like it was twelve years ago. My thinking was to get mine replaced while I'm still young (72) but the surgeon said that I would then be facing another replacement surgery in my eighties. So for now I'm sticking with what I have rather than risk any additional complications.
