RSV Vaccine ~ Thoughts?

Over time, my oncologist and I have methodically discussed various preventative vaccines ~ and I have received several ~ including SHINGRIX to hopefully avoid shingles.

Now, there's a newer vaccine to help prevent the respiratory virus known commonly as "RSV." It can be tough on infants, but also hits adults.

Many of us here consider ourselves "immune-compromised" ~ from past or present treatments and underlying conditions.

Have any of you gotten the newer RSV vaccine?

Any thoughts on the matter?

I haven't talked to my oncologist yet, but he always factors in the fact that I teach at an elementary school. We will discuss whether an additional corona booster would be prudent for me, this fall, as a new school year ramps up again.

Thought I would see if there's any "collective wisdom from the crowd" here ~ or any experiences with the RSV vaccine ...

I'm seeing more in the news about the RSV vaccine in recent days ... a timely topic!

I also plan to get it as I am a fan of preventive medicine. Will get that Covid booster too. I have had many friends die from pneumonia they got after another respiratory infection wore them down. One was a 100 year old lady who had known Thomas Edison. Didn't get the flu shot, got the flu, turned to pneumonia...then she was gone.

Would be good to know the side effects.

Mumbo's post reminded me of the vaccine discussion at my recent physical. I got a new "lifetime" pneumonia shot as the doc said it's improved over the old lifetime one. He nagged me about getting a shingles shot. No mention of RSV shot but he did tell me not to bother with a COVID shot this fall unless the strains morph again into something more sinister.

We each have individual consideration and factors to weigh.

In my case, I have had chemotherapy and radiation, plus I take daily medications that can hamper immunity.

My oncologist ALWAYS thoughtfully factors in the consideration that I teach full-time at an elementary school, with a large staff and hundreds of students.

That being said, my oncologist is also an expert in infectious diseases ~ another "high card" he holds. I'm so thankful he is my doctor.

He is an advocate for vaccines, particularly for oncology patients, and we periodically review which new vaccines have emerged now.

Perfect example ~ years ago, I had the ZOSTAVAX vaccine for shingles, but when he told me how much MORE effective the new SHINGRIX vaccine for shingles was, we then made a new plan for that two-part vaccine.

I think this thread is helpful. We all see our doctors throughout the year. I'm making mental notes to discuss the new RSV vaccine and whether I need a new corona booster.

I lost a high school classmate and also two "cancer comrades" to corona a couple of years ago. One was a prostate cancer compadre of mine, the other was a work colleague, and all 3 fellows were my age.

My oncologist is an advocate for getting one's annual flu vaccine in late September or early October.

My wife and I got the Shingrex shots last year. Felt crappy for a day, then ok.
We will get the RSV vaccine with the flu shots this year. We have had a total of 5 Covid shots each, but I don't know if we will get another as it seems it sort of burned itself out here in Arizona (probably the heat!!). We lost 2 extended family members to Covid, and almost lost 2 more in the first wave. We never got it, or if we did we had no symptoms.
We are strong believers in vaccines. Send a big thank-you across the veil to Louis Pasteur and others who kept plugging and paved the way.

I forgot to thank Jonas Salk. When I was a kid in New Orleans, I had 2 little girls in my kindergarten class on crutches from polio. That doesn't happen anymore. Have a cold one on me, Dr. Salk.

I got my two Shingrex shots last year. I had no reaction from the shots at all.

Don't forget, Shingles doesn't care. 😃

very effective commercials! i got sick from both shingrex shots but that beats the alternative

I had no problems with any shots like Shingrix, Covid, etc. other than sore arm. My wife always has flu-like symptoms for 24-48 hours after the same shots from same places. She is the trooper who gets the shots knowing that the next day or two is a sick day every time. She will get RSV if her doctor says it’s a good idea for her.
