thanks for the info, I am thinking the same way you are and you are apparently about a month ahead of me.  I am a somewhat impatient person and I try to take care of my health and it would not suit me if I had the seds or radiation and could think that I might have a chance of some cancer being left in there roaming around to catch me in a few years down the road. I would rather tackle the problem now and get it over with.  I had a minor heart attack when I was 29 and I had been over weight, no exercise, high stress job and life style and they told me I would be lucky to live to 55.  Now they can not find a trace of any heart problem as I got myself healthy and in shape and I am going to stay that way.

Thanks for the advise and I will be watching to see how you come out of your operation and that it will be easy on you so you will be my inspiration to make it easy on me.

All of the writings have been very, very helpful.   As to the VA, I can not say enough good about them here.  i go to the VA in Livermore CA which is connected to the palo Alto VA facility.  the Palo Alto VA works closly with Stanford and inter changes doctors and surgeons.  When they found my PC in the biobsies they sent me to the San Francisco VA where they have a prostate clinic.  My wife and I met with the doctor at the clinic and we were very impressed with the Doctor and the facility.  I have been to 3 VA faciliti4es around here and found them very clean and the people on staff exceptionaly nice and friendly and most important very concerned and helpful.  The Doctor in SF told us my cancer was so slow growing that it did not matter if I had surgery or seeds done now or 6 months from now so we are going ahead with plans for a trip in Jan and my robotic surgery is set for Feb 8.  The doctor who is doing it has done over 200 robotic prostate operations and if fact he is the doctor who trains the doctors at the University of California Medical center to do the robotic surgery.   Maybe there is someway you can get them to send you to the Sf Va facility and use your money for the trip cost and they will cover almost evreything else.  I am 66 and I have Medicare so I can have it done anywhere and financially I could pay for it myself if I felt it would make it better for me, but after being in the VA system here for about 6 years and from my past experience of having things done here, my wife and I agreed that VA is the best solution here.   Good luck, but maybe you should try othe VA facilities and you might hav ethe same good luck I have had.   I will just keep reading everything daily and be back on for more advise when I am a couple of days away from surgery.  Thanks to everynoe for your help and positive attitude.   Motelmat   Hi Mat…   So good to hear from you!!!!!   Excited to hear about the surgery date being scheduled.   I’ve gone back and read each posting and it’s really neat to see how you’ve processed the information you’ve received here and on other sites to make your decision.   Now… you and mama go have a great vacation (where ya goin’ ??) and know that we’ll be here when you get back.   Being away myself for 10 days really got be behind the 8 ball and I’m still catching up with some postings I’ve missed (you being one of them) and some newbie welcomes..   I’m getting there slowly.   With dial-up…. *&^%$   fill in the blanks!! Excellent to hear you've reached the decision/scheduling phase. That's such a huge step and one filled with relief, anticipation, and a little anxiety (at least for some of us). I guess about the only "good" thing with prostate cancer is most people feel healthy going in to surgery - and can have great quality time while you're waiting to get to the other side. Plus the ability to get into even better shape if needed. The time will pass quickly.

Hi Jayman,

I guess I missed your post to me of 12/2/06, but I see you are having the robotic surgery on Feb 6 and I am having mine done on Feb 8 so I guess we will face recovery together.  Keep me posted on how it is going with you.  My big concern is the problems after surgery and I have been reading everything here.  I already bought my vacurret and figuring out how to use it so I can get rolling right afer my catheter comes out.  I dont want to waste any time with that impotency problem.

Has anyone considered Proton therapy?? Go to www.protonbob.com and read about some amazing results with virtually no side effects-I was ready for surgery but am now considering Proton therapy-It's worth looking into-Tom

Jeff considered proton therapy but decided he could not take that much time away from his business. I keep hearing that this therapy will replace surgery as the "gold" standard in the future, but I think it won't happen until it is offered at more places where people don't have to be gone for 2 months. best wishes to you this week Matt!!

Mat -Consider all options but go to www.proton-therapy.org  and www.protonbob.com and look at a procedure I'm considering because of being able to talk to people who have been through proton therapy-I think you'll be amazed at the results and lack of side effects-Good luck-Tom

I had proton therapy at Loma Linda 5 yr ago - completely noninvasive and have had not side effects. 

As for it taking 9 weeks - the intervention you choose could have a substantial impact on your quality of life, so you must be ready to accept the side effects in case you are one of the unlucky ones.  I figured 9 weeks was a good trade off for no side effects.  Also, my younger brother has surgery 8 yr ago by a top doctor in NC and was told he had clean margins.  Two years ago his PSA began to rise, so there is no guarantee.

Protonbob.com will get you alot of testimonials and numbers you can call to talk to guys who have gone thru it.  It is covered by Medicare.
