Elena-
I agree with the others-the first step is to find out if and where the cancer has spread. The bone scan is the first step, and should be followed with a Pet Scan and Cat Scan-that way your dad is checked from head to toe. Is he seeing an urologist or an oncologist?
I am in the same boat as you so I understand how you feel. My precious Daddy-also 61-has PC. He was diagnosed last year. When we went in to remove his prostate, the cancer had already spread to his lymph nodes. His PSA at that point had shot up to 64. The urologist removed his LN's-and left the prostate in-that was Nov 05. IN Dec 05-my dad had the castration surgery-we were told that would kill the cancer off. The cancer went down to a .04 in the spring. We were so happy thinking we had gotten it all. At his next check up-Sep 06-his PSA had shot back up to 8.1. A few weeks ago-it was 15.88. We reran all the scans-the cancer is now in the prostate and in the lymph nodes between the kidneys. We have found an oncologist(I highly recommend this)that we love and trust now and we go to a regular cancer center. The cancer centers I have found to be more compassionate and helpful-they give me hope and help keep me encouraged. My dad is now enrolled in a clinical study-called Ascent 2. He does chemo and a high dose of Vit D with it. We have only had 2 treatments so far-just getting started. We meet with our doctor today to get a PSA score and a consultation.
Stay strong-and heathy-don't forget to take care of yourself thru this-very important. Stay positive. Go to www.yananow.net...I found a lot of encouragement there (and here). I found the medical reads to be more not encouraging-and the real life stories to be more encouraging, so I try to read things that are positive. I print these out for my Dad also. I go to all my Dad's doctor visits and treatments. I didn't last year-the first time around-and now wish I had as we aren't real sure the oncologist did all he could do. Very important also-try to get your dad eating healthy-fruit, veggies, fish, pomegranite juice. My dad is doing a low fat diet-no read meat-very little meat period. It has been proven that animal fats fuel cancer. Also-get him to exercise. Boost is great to keep his immune up.
Keep us posted on your dad's journey and test results. If you would like to email me
[email protected] would be more than happy to talk with you more and we can help each other thru this :)
And the most important thing I do is pray. God is the most powerful healer. He can also give you and your family strength and guidance :)
Take Care-I will add your dad and your family to my prayers.
