Hi,
Went to my urologist/surgeon today to have my catheter removed after open surgery on 28 Nov., 06. After deflating the balloon, the catheter did NOTcome out! Surgeon thinks that an internal stitch may have snagged the tube preventing it from coming out. He doesn't want to pull on it to hard to prevent any damage, but wants to leave the catheter in place for 2 more weeks to allow better healing and then try again. He also hopes that it will 'fall' out on it's own when the stitches start to be absorbed by the body.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening to someone else?
Btw.: Pathologists report was pretty good and the surgeon thinks that all cancer cells are gone. We'll know for sure in 3 month when my first PSA test is due.

I can see that many people have read this, but not responded. I saw it last night and immediately told my wife of your misfortune. I too was at a loss for comments. I hope your experience with the catheter isn't painful. Some people have had no problems with them at all and are very lucky. We are hoping it will fall out before the two weeks is up, perhaps in the shower given a light tug or two? Good luck and congratulations on the path report.

I too read and passed along the experience to Bob. Magaboo our thoughts are all with you in this "little glitch" in your journey. When all is said and done and things are back to normal this too will be a thing of the past.

Just know that all your forum friends are rooting for you (no pun intended). tongue

There is no pain associated with the stuck catheter, just the disappointment of having to live with it for two more weeks. Then there is the worry about how to remove it if it doesn't come out on its own. Tugging on it has thus far not moved the darn thing. Sure hope it's not going to be a permanent fixture.
I'll let you know if and when I'm finally able to throw it into the garbage can.

Hi again,
Well it happen!! Luckily I just happen to be in the bathroom sitting down, when a strange feeling came over me and behold, the catheter just slid out! The reason for it being stuck was the fact that about 2" below the end of the tube opening (the bladder end) there was a 1/2" section that look all wrinkly and partially collaps. Hard to explain, but the bottom line is: It's gone.

Paul: I posted on my page, George's Journey, about having my catheter removed Monday of this week. I said that I was probably the only person on this forum to have had problems having it removed. After reading your post, I was wrong.

Once the anchoring balloon is deflated, it should just gently slide down the urethea and out the penis. No fuss, no muss and there shouldn't be any pain. On the other hand, mine didn't want to "gently slide" out. It took several minutes of slight tugging, a bit at a time, to get it out. The nurse tried one last time and was going to get the doctor. Then, one final light pull - and it came out. Doc said it may have hung up on a suture on the way out.

Anyway, like they say, "been there - done that" and I hope yours slides out painlessly soon.

Hi~ Paul,   I know ~ you know we "all" care!!!!   That’s what makes this forum so wonderful.   There’s always someone here to respond… and eventually we all sign-in and touch base.     Whew….. I’m sure glad for your second posting on this thread…   Read the first posting @ 6:03 p.m. EST Friday …and hollered out to Buddy to get in here…..   as I was reading… I started reading replies… and my heart did a flip …. Saw the 2 nd posting from you that said, “It’s   out!!!!!!!!”   and my heart did a flop     Whew!!! I’m sure glad hang didn’t hang around any longer!!!!!   Now that you’ve had a stepping-stone ~ that a lot of us haven’t had…. I’m glad you posted it with the title… Stuck Catheter !!   This will ease a lot of others if this should happen to them.      Magaboo …   How are things going with Hang gone?   Remember ~ we all heal at a different rate so take one day at a time….   How did the spasms do?   Were you able to get them under control???   Take care and know you’re in our thoughts and prayers.. as we continue to play catch up with all the postings…. I told Buddy I need a laptop for when we go on other adventures…   Being gone 10 days with no contact with our friends is not a good thing!   Cuz it takes double the time to get caught up!   I still have a few newbies I haven’t welcomed.     You are and definitely have been in our thoughts and prayers. Hi again,
Well it's probably a little early to jump to any conclusions, but first indications are that there is very little leakage and going to the bathroom is no problem! I'm actually a little surprised - I expected much worse. However, as I've said, it's maybe to soon to jump to any firm conclusions, but so far so good. I'll let you guys (and that means girls as well :-)) know how things develop in the next little while.
Btw.: Have I said thanks to all you caring people lately? Don't know how I could have managed without you.

Yeah!!!!!   Good News ….We'll take it!!!!  As we say.... One-Day-At-A-Time...   Now ~ don’t forget to continue doing your exercises…. And the stairs are a good thing.   The main thing is to listen to your body.   The sphincter muscle will definitely tell you if he gets tired.   So ~ Listen carefully.    And YES!!!   You’ve told us in many ways…. By staying with us and allowing us to walk with you ~ on your journey is the best thanks we could ever ask for!!!   You are now on the recover/healing stepping-stone.   Take your time to heal.   Don’t push it okay!!!!     Take care dear friend…..   You are in our thoughts and prayers. Sometimes it is best not to say anything. I had my catheter removed last friday, and you want to talk about pain. It was worse than the operation itself. It was terrible burning for about three minutes. Then the pain subsided and now all is well. Catheters and i do not get along.

Congrads Paul! I'm glad everything worked OUT well in the END!! Now it will just take some time and you will be back to normal! A new normal, but normal!

Paul, so glad you're past that. I can only imagine the relief of seeing it pop out. Now, remember to not overdo things - there's such a new level of freedom when the Foley comes out. No lifting or becoming too confident just yet.

But, now you are indeed on to the next stepping stone (hi, MamaB!).

Paul,

The best way to show your thanks is to help others through this forum by being active and sharing your journey. All you have to do is look at the hits that any one thread gets and know that there are a lot of what we are calling lurkers that read but do not participate. They need to information that we can provide are they woud not be lurking.

Paul, sorry to hear about the problem with the catheter. Mine malfunctioned and only with the grace of God was it fairly easily removed only 4 days after surgery. Once out, I found I had my continence back and didn't need a new one inserted! However, the removal did have some issues with discomfort, but by the time I had the chance to feel any pain, it was out already!

Hang in there Paul... it will be a distant memory in another month from now.

Hi Paul,

Curtis said when "hang" was removed that it burned coming out, but he was glad to see the last of it.  So I guess everyone's reaction is different.  Glad it's gone now anyway!!

I had the same thing happen to me. Two weeks after my surgery the urologist deflated the balloon and tried to remove the catheter; he couldn't.  He said it might come out on its own later and booked another time with me a week later in case it didn't.   Needless to say, I was disappointed.  The thought of another week with the thing depressed me.  The good news is that later that night while sitting at the computer, I felt a wierd pain and some leakage. When I went to the washroom, the catheter was out.  So if anyone finds themselves in the same situation, don't panic it can come out on its own.
