Nerve sparing on one side only - experience off effects?

I was diagnosed with PC Gleason 3+4 with tumour on only one side. Will be operated on within 8 weeks in Robot by Karolinska hospital of Sweden. Surgeon claims he can only spare nerves on one side. Any of you guys who was spared on only one side who has experience of how it affected potens?

It would be worth reading articles by Dr Walsh and Dr Scardino on nerve sparing and nerve grafting.

Johns Hopkins have information in some of their newsletters available at www.urology.jhu.edu/newsletter.

Both doctors have published books on prostate cancer: "Dr Peter Scardino's Prostate Book" covers surgery, nerve sparing and nerve grafting in detail. He indicates that when one nerve is removed and replaced by a graft, the result is about as good as when both nerves are spared, and more than twice as good as the outcome without grafts.

Hi Bjorn,

My husband had an open RRP last july in which only one nerve was saved.  I'm happy to tell you that we had an erection and intercourse 3 weeks later with the aid of viagra.  Things have only got better in that department even to the point that he doesen't even need the viagra anymore.  However.....he still needs to wear 1-3 pads a day for the incontinence, that is taking longer to get back.  It seems like it is different for everyone though.  Your young age and good health (other than PC) is in your favor.  PC doesn't mean the end of your sex life!  There are many options available to help in that area. I think/hope this is what you were asking about!

Thanks Letty for letting me know your experience of this. That was the most positive I have heard so far... So maybe "happy days" are not over? :-)
