Prostate Cancer

 

   I am looking for information on robotic surgery.  I have

   found two doctors in Fort Pierce Fl who do this kind of

   surgery.  Looking for help.  I was told approx. three

   weeks ago that I have prostate cancer.  My gleason

   score is 6.

Hi surfside. Sorry you have to be here but glad you found us. There is a large amount of information here about robotic surgery and on the internet. If you think surgery is for you, don't be afraid of the open type. I had mine on May 30th. Had little pain and had the cath for two weeks. What ever kind of surgery you choose it will change your life forever. There are no absolutes but things can be managed. I only spent two and a half days in the Hospital and no pain meds after the surgery, even now. Seek out the best and most experienced surgeon you can find. Get recommendations from other patients, then get it out.

Sorry to meet you in this forum, but glad you found it.  As we all make suggestions, it might be good if we knew a little more about you if you are agreeable - your PSA, age, etc.

Since you are searching for doctors instead of one being recommended to you by your doctor, how did you decide on surgery?  This is a great forum to check out all of the treatment modalities available and their side effects.

Welcome and glad you found this site. I'm not familiar with docs in Florida but I just wanted to mention that make sure you find a very, very experienced Robotic surgeon (if you decide to go that way). The main thing to look for is an excellent doctor and second is the type of procedure he performs. If you can't find a fabulous doc then consider going out of state. Prostate surgery is one of the most complicated surgeries and you want to make sure someone very qualified performs it. My understanding is that the only advantage of robotics is a slightly shorter recovery period if compared to a procedure that is performed by a highly qualified surgeon (anyone reading this, please correct me if I’m wrong here since my husband had an open procedure).

I'm right down the road from you in Lantana! I was in your shoes 4 years ago and speaking from experiance, there are lots of Uro's here who would love to go to work on you. If I were you I'd get on line and check out Jackson Memorial in Miami, the Clevland Clinic in Davie, the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, and there was a post here not long ago asking the same question about Fla. Surgins and someone mentioned a great surgin at a hospital in Tampa. Check these out and go w/ your heart! Get the best you can and don't spare the expence. Look at who has done the most robotics at each facility and research the surgins. There are excelent surgins in Fla. you just have to do your homework. Back when I was diognosed, I interveiwed lots of local Uros and decided to go th Johns Hopkins after reading Patric Walsh's book. I didn't even know about robotic surgery back then and opped for the radical prostatectomy. (the gold standard at the time) If you don't find anyone in Fla. go out of state! With a 6 gleason you have time to find what you are looking for. God bless you and good luck and stick around !
