Hi Y'all !
I just discovered this forum and am glad to find such a wealth of info. I feel like I'm very fortunate to have caught my disease in its early stages while I'm still healthy enough to handle the challenges of surgery.

It's been 4 weeks since my surgery. I feel great ! No real complaints. I was able to play golf 1 week after the catheter was removed. But I'm still seeing blood in my urine when I do exercise like swimming or swinging a golf club. It only happens once and then my urine returns to normal color, until the next time I exercise. The logical thing is to back off on the exercise but I feel so good doing it. I just want to know if anyone else has had this experience and did it go away eventually.

I'm waiting for the surgeons nurse to call me back about this. Thanks.

Final pathology - fully contained to prostate, 2% TC1, Gleason 3+3
Only occasional need for incontinence pad 4 weeks after surgery

Hello: I am so glad to have found this site. I do hope you continue to do well!!! Our son will be having the robotic surgery July 10 and he is so anxious to hear from those that have had it!!!
I do not remember his PSA but lower than yours I THINK or there about...Biopsy 17 samples. Gleason score is 6 and T1 and T2. I do not know what that means exactly...but Dr feels like it is all contained in the prostate.
From the discussion we had with the surgeon your symptoms do not seem OUT OF CONTROL.
How long were you in the hospital? Was it a very painful surgery?

bobsmom: I had robotic surgery so I was only in the hospital overnight. From my back surgeries in the past, I've found that if you show the doctor when he does his rounds the next day that you are ready to go home, as long as there are no complications like fever/excessive bleeding, they will usually discharge you. The less time I spend in a hospital the better, i.e., I'd rather be miserable at home than in a hospital bed.

As far as pain, the robotic surgery isnt bad. I dont tolerate narcotics very well (vomiting, constipation) so I refused anything but Tylenol or Aleve. I was walking the next morning, wheeling around my IV bag. Once they take out the 2 drain tubes, he will feel better. Then it's just getting used to the catheter. I knew it would be only in for 10 days so I could see the end in sight.

I hope you son's surgery goes well. My advice is to keep his sense of humor, be patient and stay positive. It will get better.

Hi Grover. I have overdone it a couple of times, but last week I walked 30 minutes four days. Friday I was bad constipated and strained very hard. Got up friday morning with a little blood in my urine. It got better saturday and sunday but a little worse on monday. I talked with my Dr's PA and he told me to stop doing what I thought was causing the problem and stop aspirin etc. So I slowed down with the walking and it helped. Only a little blood now and then. Talking with other survivors they tell me it is no big deal. No large clots just a little pink when I do the kegels so I stopped them too. Hope this helps. Waked a lot today but at a much slower pace.

Grover thank you so much for responding....your giving me HOPE. Our Son has not been here to read any of this but should be tomorrow. I know with the upcoming surgery anyone would be anxious! I have read several other posts and I am so thankful that all of them are so open about explaining the situation during and after surgery. I wish the Dr had given us the information to such a site. Perhaps he isn't aware of it, but I think it would help with his patients concerns. Maybe this is something we need to inform him about in the future. We go for pre-op July 5. Again thanks, MOM

Bobsmom - I think it's so great to have a concerned Mom in the forum. It truly is an informative, caring, supportive place. As a wife of a prostate cancer survivor, I can't even imagine how our journey would have been without this forum. I didn't find it until about 2 weeks post surgery, but it's been amazing.

Perhaps you'd like to start your own thread with Bob's journey so we can follow you. You mentioned his surgery is July 10, and we'll all be with him as he goes into surgery, and waiting to welcome him in here to "the other side".

If you start your own thread (maybe title it My Son Bob's Journey) we won't miss anything you post and you'll receive lots of support and replies.

You’ll eventually learn that mama bluebird “chirp~chirp~chirps” when it comes to HealingWell….

And when we read your post!!!! Not only did I chirp but a few eeekkkkkk’s came out of my beak too!!!



Now this is a personal comment and in no way do I mean any disrespect for your decisions….. but….

You are feeling great and this is great…. BUT….



Your body has had major surgery and I don’t even want to think about what your insides are saying about you golfing this early on!



Well ~ hmmmm I guess I don’t have to think too far ~

Your body is talking to you by letting you know that you are doing things too soon. This stepping-stone of healing/recovery is so fragile and if you disregard it and step on to the next one… your body is definitely going to rebel. The consequences are profound… so please take care of you and take care of your body until it is healed.



Again ~ this comes from our heart and from having walked that path!!! As so many here have done.



Exercise yes!!!! But ~ in moderation and gradually build up to your normal routine. And when that time comes!!!! (after you’ve allowed your body the proper time to heal)

Listen to MamaB, Grover. Or we'll all be piling into this thread and reading you the riot act! Our doc said "no lifting, no strenuous activity" for 8 weeks. And you also run the risk of developing a hernia (as Spinbiscuit can attest to two of them from overdoing post-surgery).

The good news is - you're feeling great. Now, let's keep it that way and take it easy for just a bit longer.

OK. I've cut back to 9 holes of golf instead of 18 :) No bloody urine today. And golf isnt really strenuous exercise for me....I have a nice easy swing. And I think I'm in pretty good shape compared to others my age. But I appreciate the good intended advice... really. I dont want to mess up what appears to be very successful work by my surgeon. I'll cut back on the "strenuous" exercise for a while and see how it goes. Thanks.

Good idea Grover. Cut back a bit. I also "crossed the line," in terms of physical activity and paid for it with late-term bleeding, passing clots etc. after four weeks. When I finally "veged out" for a couple of weeks, things cleared up and I was off to the races again. I say give it at least eight weeks before trying to behave like your old physical self - heavy lifting etc. Even then, you may feel some strain in your stomach muscles after exertion. That's my two cents, but talk to your doc.
