Dear Maria Teresa,

I am glad about the scan results. I will be praying for you and Rod as you go on your journey to wellness.  The first time I learned about my husband's biopsy results, I too was crying on most days.  But, as the days passed, I regained my composure and resolved to fight this disease that never even passed our thoughts.  I know you and Rod are gonna be okay.  Just keep on fighting and praying.

HELLO- whILE i DO not haVE prostate cancer, I've had BPH enlargement for 2 plus years. My urologist said I HAD to do a TURP and foolishly I did not get a second opinion first. I had two more follow up TURPS in the next 3 months and still not working exactly right. Those procedures caused problems that I NEVER had before then in regard to boy function (NOT ED)-- you MUST get second or third opinions on things like this even if you don't want to. I was hesitant to do so because I don't like being examined by strangers and having to go to places I am not familiar with.

I now wish I had MADE myself do that first. I have since been to two different practices and managed to deal with the embarassment of the exams and discussing intimate subjects. Both urologists wrote down notes like we were talking about the weather. I also had women do part of the procedures (my always horror before at my original office) and I managed to do ok on that too. I have taught half the nurses in my area over the past almost 30 years and having them be "down there"  was a problem for me. BY going to a BIG city an hour away, I'll never see those folks in a non-clinical setting like at the grocery or Wal-mart. I think that made it easier too.

GET THAT EXTRA OPINION !!!!!  Good luck and if  had to do radical prostate surgery, I KNOW after research in the past yeat it would be the ROBOTIC kind and by someone who has done LOTS of them...

If he has only done 5 of these find another doctor.  You want someone who has done around 100 or more.  To say he will take the nerves without looking at it is a sign of a poor doctor.  They should not make any decisions until they are inside and they do whatever they have to.

I would stongly search for another doctor.  I did and the second doctor was much more positive and said his goal was to get rid of the cancer and the second goal was quality of life.  He did an excellent job and I was so happy I went to another doctor.  In going to another doctor my operation was only delayed 10 days.

Also, if you have other docotrs ask them who they would recommend.  That is how I found my doctor and he was 1000% better then my first doctor.

Hi Maria Teresa, I can't help you with your choice of Surgeon, because I live in Perth Australia, but in my case we researched for a Urology Surgeon with a good track record for nerve sparing and incontinence. We eventually tracked down the man who we considered the best for us, and when we went to see him, he explained everything to us in detail, in regard to the nerve sparing, he said as the tumour was in the right side of my prostate, that nerve would not be able to be spared, but he could save the left one, he also said that 95% of his patients were continent after surgery, so we went with him, a most patient, caring man.

So I feel you should get a second opinion on the nerve sparing, and in fact consider the open surgery, it's really a breeze, compared to other surgery I have had, the surgeon told me that he preferred RP as he could feel and see the operation site better.

So here I am 30 days out from the op, Pca gone, and continent from day they removed the cath (exept when I sneezed a couple of times)

So I wish you and your man all the best for the future and a good outcome.

(For the benifit of anyone here in Perth WA the Surgeons name is Mr J. Judge)
