        My husband just had da Vinci prostatectomy done yesterday.  We are home today.  He has had a terrible time with gas. It has been very painful and want to know if this is commom.  Also he had to come home with stomach cath, as he was still draining a lot.  The Dr. said this is not uncommom as he had to do extra work because of the shape of he prostate up against his bladder.  Says everything went well and looks good.  Will get path report next Friday.. We had Dr.Reymensy from Battle Creek Michigan.  He has done over 300 and after talking to several Dr. seemed to be our best choice.  Mike is 55 ,psa of 2.9 ,Gleason 6 with 2 out of 12 positive. One 3% and the other 20% on one side of prostate.  Have been reading your posts and hope I can benefit from all of your wisdom.  Hope soon I can close my eyes and really rest!!!   Thanks for any information.

Yes, gas is a common problem, and should pass. The anesthesia is a good part of that, I've heard.

Hi, Doting. Isn't it good to be back home and done with surgery? Hopefully, the gas is gone by now, but walking as much as possible will also help alleviate/release it some.

Hi Doting,
One of the very first questions my nurse asked while still in the hospital was whether I was passing gas or not. Of course I was, and the reply was "good". It will last about two days possibly three. When performing the daVinci there are five incisions and another small one. That is where they pump in CO2 to get a good view of the disection area. They remove as much as possible and the rest passes normally like gas. In addition, both Hagrid and Greenacres are correct as well. Anesthesia can also induce gas, and walking is the best way to rid the gas.

Welcome to the other side. I didn't come home with the stomach cath but a friend of mine did since he was still draining quite a bit a day or two past surgery. He had it removed a couple of days after being discharged from the hospital. The more I read about guys having trouble with gas pains the more fortunate I feel. I had no pain whatsoever associated with gas. Welcome home!

Dear Doting, great news that your hubby is through the surgery and that things look good. Make sure he gets lots of rest! I had A LOT of painful gas, and, to be blunt, BMs were very painful for about a week and usually accompanied by blood from penis. I called dr and he said this was not unusual at all. Pushing will open up the internal suture sites just enough to bleed a little. He was right -- after about a week, all was well. Taking a stool softerner really helped. Hang in there. This, too, shall pass (pun intended)!

Hi Doting,

I would make sure that your hubby uses a light laxative each morning, I used an equate brand (walmart) fiber laxative that is orange flavored, tastes very good, you mix it with water to make an 8oz glass, it goes down very easy and does it ever help.....the last thing you want at this stage is to get constipated, because if you strain you are liable to pop the small incisions where the davinci instruments were inserted.....that would not be good!!! I ran into a big problem called bladder spasms about a week after surgery....I never had a worse pain in my life....you might check with your urologist or surgeon and have a prescription available to help with this....I had to call my doc at 10:30PM to get him to call my pharmacist who was home a prescription. Thankfully my pharmacist came out and filled the script.....I'll owe him a ham, turkey or maybe a bottle of good bourbon for helping me out...Anyway, none of this will probably happen, just tell him to go slow and take it easy and don't rush the situation and all will be fine. Good luck and tell him that this is going to take a while...I am now 6months out from davinci and am just now almost continent. I still wear a pad as a security blanket but most of the time it remains dry. JWB

Hi Doting Wife. Glad to have you on the other side. I had redical surgery and I had gas and constipation also. The gas pains were bad and like you have seen already, get some laxative and walk. All this too shall pass in a few days. These things are normal. Keep us informed how you guys are doing. Take care and don't overdo it.

My date with the robot is set for the first of the year. I didn't like the other options, so out it comes. Because i had three biopsy's in three years. Because of that the Doctor said the nerves would be so pushed in the prostate he couldn't save them. My health is more important anyway!
