How many RRP has your surgeon done?

I have read you have the best chance of having a successful operation by a surgeon that has done a large amount of RRPs.  I thought someone posted that their surgeon has done over 1500 of these.  Can someone give me the names of their surgeon who has done robtic RRPs and an estimate of RRPs done?

Are you talking open RRP's? or including DaVinci RRP's? Mine has done over 1000 DaVinci RRP's, though he was trained in open and did laproscopic as well. And still does these, depending on the patient.

There are many that are great. Mine Dr. Tim Wilson, and his partner Dr. Mark Kawachi, have done over 3000 at The City of Hope near Los Angeles.

My Da Vinci was performed by Dr. Vipul Patel. At the time, he was at OSU, but I believe he is now at Florida Hospital. I was about his 2000th patient, and I think he is now claiming to have done more surgeries personally than anyone else. I had to travel from California to get the surgery and am extremely happy with the results.

This raises an interesting question: if everybody wants a surgeon with at least 200 operations behind him/her, how does a new surgeon get that experience? Is this 200 operations on live patients, or does it include simulations?

I hope that new surgeons starting out do their first live operations under the supervision of an experienced surgeon -- if that really does happen, we should be quite safe. But does it happen like that -- does anyone here know?

The articles/studies I read referred to a docs early patients as "concerning statistics". The recurrence rates are significantly higher with inexperienced surgeons, suggesting they don't get good margins and leave cancer behind. Also, incontinence and permanent impotence rates are higher.

My Dr. told me he as done so many that he can literally feel if there is cancer in the margins and whether he needs to take nerves or can spare them. I did open surgery, not robotic. I had a consultation with an experienced Robotic guy too who said that he could tell from the way the nerve bundles came away from the prostate. Of course, no matter how experienced, none can provide guarantees against micro metastisis which is always a risk and undetectable early on.

Chris, there are many many experienced surgeons all over the country. Both for open surgery and robotic. There are also other treatments such as Proton Therapy that have had incredibly promising results to be considered. So let folks know where you are so you get the referrals to the top surgeons near you geographically.

My surgeon is Dr. Catalona in Chicago at Northwestern. He does only open. Dr. Zagaja is the top robot guy in Chicago and he's at Univ of Chicago.
