Okay...another question.  (Dang don't you all just love questions...)

Has anyone had a spinal block instead of general anesthetic when performing a surgery...either laproscopic or open? 

The reason for the question is my pulmo said it would be too risky going under a general due to some lung problems.

Just trying to look at all posible treatment solutions.

I had a spinal for open surgery. They also gave me something to block my memory of the whole thing. Then he put pain killers inside me and I had virtually no pain while in the hospital. I was sore after I got home but only need some Tylenol to get by...

I had major leg (artery replacement) and Abdominal Aortic Anuerism several years ago. Several operations all with Epidural (spinal tap I think)

Again thanks to everyone...so many decisions and choices to review. So far they are all good and all bad at the same time...go figure. Thank goodness I have plenty of time to research and think about the direction my wife and I want to go. Richard, we haven't gotten to your suggestion yet as we are still in the early phases of research on the first suggestion of treatment by the uro. But believe me we will research them all very carefully before making any plans.

Big thanks to all here...a great community of folks that give you straight answers...just the way I like it.

I thought the same thing as Richard when I read your post.  If surgery is risky, why not go with a less risky treatment that continues to gain momentum.  I seriously considered Protons for myself.

Hi Lv-TX

My Dr. who was going to put me to sleep suggested I have an epidural because it would allow me to better manage my pain.  After reminding her I was not going to have a baby, I said sure let's do it.  One of the best decisions of my life.  I woke up without any problems. Was wide awake all day after the early morning surgery and finally got sleppy at 11:00PM that night.  And best of all, no pain meds since surgery (May 2007).  I never filled the prescription.
