What is a transrectal MRI? How is it conducted? This is procedure my doc is sending me to get.   I can't seem to find anybody to help explain what it is...and what happens. thanks.

.....hey Banker.  Just Google it, you'll find all you need to know.......and just to let you know, it's not bad at all. Just another one of those fun filled procedures we all love to go through, honestly though, it wasn't bad......I might add I did take a couple magic tablets to help calm me before going in the tube, and then you don't go in all the way......

I'm not sure you want to know :) We actually didn't tell my dad exactly what the transrectal MRI entailed, so he was not very happy with us when he came out. Needless to say, it is supposed to be more accurate, however, it said my dad's lymph nodes were negative and the path report found a positive lymph node, so I would be sure and speak with your Dr about the accuracy. I believe it is important if you are trying to spare the nerves because it gives a pretty detailed look and gives the surgeon an idea of how close the cancer comes to the nerves.

I had one done before my surgery. It gives the doctor a view good view of the area around and including the prostate. To be honest with you, which we are here in the forum I am not sure how I made it through it. They insert a coil with a balloon at the end into your rectum. They then blow up the balloon to ensure it stays intact during the MRI. I had to have a enema the night before to ensure all was clear. I then went into the tube for 42 minutes. They also run an iv for mri with contrast. The pain and discomfort was very difficult to deal, what got me through it is I a convince was the grace of God. I prayed and pictured in my mind my kids and wife and kept thinking of them. I also says prayers during it to keep my mind off of the pain and discomfort. If I had to do this test again I would demand my doctor to give me some sort of medication to get through it. I also experienced spasm in my lower instestine for two days after the removed the coil. It is a important test for the Doctor to get a better understanding of what is going on so it should be done but it was tough for me.

I spoke to the technician this afternoon. In his words, "it's not bad," then included that he had never had one himself. After he gave the details, I took many deep breaths. It sounds hideous...perhaps worse than the biopsy, which i thought was pretty difficult, too. Sounds like medication to help get through it would be helpful. Also, shu93, your technique of focusing on positive thoughts seem to work as well. I'll be trying all of that.

....ya' know, this is a great site, but I'm telling ya' banker, it ain't nothing...considering what it is we're dealing with......and I'm talking about the PCa, not the procedure....the worrying is the worst part...it ain't bad, have em' put on your favorite radio station and chill out.....heck, I can think of a lot worse procedures or test that are worse.....honest, this isn't nothing, don't get all worked up over it.....
