AS to when to try, the standard answer is "What did your Dr. tell you? In my case, I tried and accomplished an orgasm at the 4 week mark, and was cleared to resume full intercourse at 6 weeks. It varies by doctor and patient here. Some did a few days after catheter removal, some waited 8 weeks or more.

my, aren't we an anxious one. lol. sounds like you are doing good so far, and my normal response to your question, is to listen to what you doctor says. your body has been through a lot of shock and awe. the fact that your interest is back so soon is encouraging i think. hope you enjoy being here, and there are many that will help you along your path to recovery. my best to you.

Thanks guys. I guess it's a bit silly to be worrying about this so soon, but I'm anxious to get back to as regular a life as possible. I have found that my interests in many areas have dropped (including guitar, but I only have 6!) so i'm trying to get back and forcing myself to do some things in the hopes of kickstarting my life. But I guess I have to be more patient and let nature take it's course. I was always pretty ummm "active" before, hence my question about when I can start up again. But maybe I should stick to guitar for a while!

Intercourse and orgasm are two completely different things - as if that needs to be stated! An orgasm in itself is most likely perfectly safe. I had an orgasm two weeks out. Nothing much happens in an orgasm to cause a problem - a few slightly contracting muscles. Your urethra goes through more than that with urination!

The reason for intercourse caution is because of the physical exertion. Think of doing it missionary position ...Ouch. You could really hurt yourself and the strain is considerable. Even any other easier position gets a bit risky if you get thrusting etc. (that is if you would ever get lucky enough to thrust with anything in the first place!)

So, just as lifting anything heavy is out of the question, so is real intercourse. NOW - M*sturbation, BJ etc are NOT intercourse and as long as you lie there quietly, the likely hood of anything happening is remote to say the least. And to that end...the likelyhood of ANYTHING happening is remote. The first few orgasms are usually disappointing. They might even hurt a bit, feel weird and not even feel like anything at all.

Call your Dr. and double check if orgasm is out, or just sex. My Doc told me that things were pretty well stitched up down there and if I felt like an orgasm, that was a good sign and have some fun.

You learn that specifics are rare in this field.

Well, apparently an erection is out of the question (try as I might). Orgasm is another matter, though as Paul said, it was kinda uncomfortable, felt a little weird, and seemed to leave me a little inflamed after, as my urine flow was restricted till the next day. Not sure it was worth the trouble, frankly. I think I'll wait a while longer before trying again. I had frankly thought I may have caused myself some damage there for a while because I was rather achy down there after and my urine wasn't flowing as well.

I'm at 3 weeks today. Still not very active. Not much energy, but I'm not sleeping really well either. Whenever i try to go for a walk or do anything around the house I get some pain at the surgical sites and discomfort and have to take it easy for a while afterwards. I really thought I'd be feeling better by now. I must try to be more patient, but when it comes to healing, I have little patience.

Geetarguy, I asked that same question to my doctor about two weeks post op. He said no sex for six weeks as it might cause a hernia. However, he did say that ********** or oral would be okay.

G - My doctor said it was very important for me to start Cialis and vacuum device as soon as I had catheter removed. Not sex right away but just to get the nerves working and blood flowing for long term benefits. Of course I had only 1 bundle of nerves spared so that may be the difference. But I would ask about the Cialis issue rather than waiting.

The type or brand of ED pills is a physician and or patients choice. Some will tend to prescribe a certain one. All three of the big ones- Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis should work fine for penile and tissue rehab in most cases, it's just the mechanism that is different. Since most insurance companies won't pay for ED pills, or will for just a few, the real choice for most of us is alldaychemist and their generic versions. Generic Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate 100mg) and Levitra (Vardenafil) can come into the USA, wheras Cialis (Tadalafil) can't, so that may have some bearing on what your doctor prescribes for you or what you ask for. Viagra is short lasting, while the other two tend to last for up to 36 hours or longer. The effective of the allday generics are the same or even better in some few cases than the original name brands, so it is reported by users here. I use Medco, and my insurance plan does not cover any ED drugs for post-prostate cancer use. Now if you are organically impotent from other more 'natural' reasons, they will cover it.. Go figure--just one of the unbalanced areas of care for us guys... Between my GP and the Urologist I manage to bum quite a few of the brand name office samples and supplement with alldaychemist.

I had a catheter in for 15 days.  three days after the catheter pull I experienced my first orgasm, it was not that enjoyable or comfortable.  I waited another week or two to try again and there was no discomfort.  I can have orgasms although Mr. Happy does not work at all still, even with Viagra. 

Hi everyone ... first, I don't want to freak any of you out by acknowleging that I'm a 'female' and 44... but I can absolutely talk the language of prostate cancer - da vinci machine surgery - and post-prostate removal activities and frustrations. My 54 yr. old, musician, and significant other of 6 years had to have his prostate removed 1/8/08.  We did a LOT of research as you likely all can concur this decision is NOT an easy one.  We decided that the da vinci was the best route to go as we were assured it was the least invasive of the surgeries for total removal of the prostate.  Prior to his surgery we noticed his frequent urination, and declining erection control.  This is what led him to seek answers to why he was having these symptoms.  Before all of that we had a fantastic and healthy sex life. We were assured that though we could expect a period of anywhere between 3-8 months before bladder control and sexual function would be potentially fully intact ... it could actually be up to 2 years post surgery before sexual function would be back. It's now been 13 months since surgery.  His bladder control came back completely just 5 weeks post-surgery (so we're thinking YEAH sexual recovery should be just around the corner!).  Not so.  Immediately post surgery - while still in the hospital ... he was put on Cialis.  He took that faithfully for a year since.  In late Jan. 09, he met with his urologist to discuss the fact that 'nothing' was happening in the erection department.  He has done the penis pump faithfully as well, tried the rings, etc..  Urologist gave him an abundance of Cialas, Viagra and Levitra and said 'experiment and see if something works'. Aside from the horror of reaching the point in which a specialist simply hands out meds and says basically 'hey, i have no idea, try these ...' .... it was an emotionally and mentally draining experience as well - as this is the point where it became evident that we likely are no longer on a 'progressive' recovery ... but rather ... potentially ... a permanent pitfall. Which brings us to today ... none of the combinations or experiementations of those three pills made any difference.  He suffered side effects from the Viagra that we both agreed were definitely not worth taking them again. He spoke with his urologist two days ago, said he was ready to try the last resort of 'injections'.  He received those meds today.  To my astonishment ... he was not told to come in to the dr. office to be injected the first time to learn what dosage is appropriate for him to begin, much less given a 'hands on' instruction on how to overcome the mental discomfort of injecting his own dick with a needle. So, the meds came ... no instruction, no indication of dosage amount whatsoever.  Calls the dr. they're out for the day. Now, this may seem a testimony that most don't want to hear ... but I feel it should be said.  This is a real scenario. It's an emotional and mental upheaval to say the least.  I feel his urologist is very neglegent with the medication - Prostaglandin -E1   20 MCG/ML - but now that it appears we're at this level of 'not' being able to have a normal or even any sexual life again ... it's horrible. All that stated ... he is able to achieve orgasm and was able to achieve that (sans the fluid as removal of the prostate disallows the seminal fluid you used to have) - at about the 6 week mark, though no erection. Thanks to any of you who read this whole thing .. I appreciate just being able to discuss it.

It would really help to know if the drug was Caverject, Edex or Trimix. It sounds like he was given Caverject, which can give you this really awlful burning pain. I have tried all three of the above and now only use the Trimix.

I can state that all three of the Injection Drugs worked great for me. I had four hour erections all over the place until I discovered the right drug dose.

ljm, Welcome to HW. Pardon me for being a little confused. You have the med. for injection Prostaglandin 20mcg strength. This I understand. I can't tell if you have tried it yet or not? If you haven't tried it yet, we/I can give some pointers for the initial attempts, if that is what you are asking? The fact that your doctor has dumped this in his lap without any education or support ir bad and not anything that a patient could or would expect. He definitly is wrong on this. That being the case, it is something you/he will have to take up. In the meantime, we can help you with education and tips for using the injection drugs and try to get you two off on the right foot using it. It's a mater of trial and error beginnning, and you will still have some failures along the way, but there's a ton of sources, data, and experience here if and when you two are ready to try it. It may be that this drug will not be the one to work, but finding the right one can be managed. If you wish to investigate the ed injections in detail, I got lots of links for you to read and learn, or just ask what you need from us. There's a couple dozen here that has been down that same road and should be more than willing to help as we can.

As an aside, I have been in the same situation as far as failure of ed recovery as he has, just 4 months longer. Been thru the pumps, pills, and the injections, I have had no recovery of function using the pump or pills, but do get good results with the Trimix. I personally am not giving up hope until the 2 or 2 1/2 years mark. Lets us know how we can help.
