It has been devilishly difficult to show conclusively that something simple like eating more fruits and vegetables or exercising regularly helps. And, as the response to the prostate drugs shows, people are not enthusiastic about taking anticancer pills, or are worried about side effects or not really convinced the drugs work. Others are just unaware of them."

Not just about PC, but definitely worth the read. I am so glad that, unlike medicine, engineering is an exact science.


P.S. if you believe that, then brother Jeff will be by to sell you an electroshock device to stuff in your briefs. (actually he won't sell it, he will tell you how to build it with parts from an old TV)

Not sure what to think about the sketchy study.

1. Men don't generally know or care about prostate cancer until they are in their mid to late 50's. The study said it was found to prevent cancer in men 55 and above. When would men begin taking the drug?

2. How many of us would take a drug that would reduce our already waning sex drive when we are perfectly healthy at age 55 for a 25 % chance of not getting prostate cancer which we already only have a 17 % chance of getting ?

3. Oh, and by the way, if we do get cancer after taking the drug, we have a slighlty higher chance of getting more aggressive tumors.

4. It may be a better shot to just have a DaVinci when we are done having children. That would give a 100 % chance of not getting PC. Wouldn't that be a better statistical deal ?

Sometimes these PC things don't make all the sense they seem to think they do.

goodlife, your points 1-3 make good sense and logic, point 4: not sure our insurance companies would go for that, if you were being literal.

I must admit, that until I started having PSA test included in my yearly exams at age 50, not sure I ever thought one time in my entire life that I have a prostate, let along a thought about prostate cancer.

I for one, don't think I would have taken any med to prevent something that I didn't know about.

I asked Catalona about finasteride, he said it just masks the cancer.
